aw, glad you read it. That was a nerve-wracking essay to post.

living in dense community has not solved all my problems... if anything, I have more problems than ever.

I feel my college-self [curious, ambitious, uncertain] coming out again for the first time since I left home.

I am once again happily lost in a society that is too complex for me to understand.

i can't tell if i want to be posting on bluesky or on twitter, so forgive my while i cross-post a bit.I'm trying to directly compare what it feels like to post the same sort of thing in both places

deleting because this is an unnecessary point to make and isnt relevant in contexts that matter

i should have focused on what i wanted instead of what i didnt want. classic mistake

but the answer to your question about how this is a question is that some people are really afraid of info hazards :/

2 years ago 2 0 1 0

true, i was mainly venting about a fear of info hazards that i just read, not a fear of violence.

there are reasons to suspect violence, and if you suspect that then there is a healthy amount of fear which can help you act to protect yourself and others.

main thing we can do rn to make things more welcoming here is writing posts that are easy to engage with - asking questions that have easy answers, participation memes like "post a picture of [whatever]". take the perspective of someone who just got here and ask what would get them to reply

our optimism and hope for a better future can devolve so quickly when we fight with strangers for (social) territory.

it's never too late to refocus on what you love and share that with those around you. It's never too late.

this is what respected elders and a public commons are normally for.

that there are entire cultures where from the "elders" all the way down to the common people it's considered morally acceptable to bully others is... something.

no idea what to do other than exile, though. "restorative justice" ideas seem barely developed, except as a general point that "we should do better". Sadge.

yea, I agree. you have to excise these people.

my friend says it's about 5%, which seems roughly accurate with my experience as well.

The cool thing is that the vileness is actually pretty loud to your senses if you're paying attention, and backchannel helps a LOT (who did they burn before you?)

very much a believer that no social theory is true, but some are useful, so I'm curious what the "this will be materially useful to my life" part of this is.

(also, FWIW, I agree in a lot of respects, and like Great Founder Theory as a deep dive on similar ideas)

most of the arguments now hinge on how we construct the ideas of what a society are, and there is no one accepted theory here.

mind defining some terms so we can discuss:
- define "an elite"
- define "rule"
- define "rule directly" (as compared to the above)

also, why is this a useful theory?
