📣 NEW! I’ve just released the BIGGEST and perhaps most creative project I’ve ever worked on!
“Searching for Birds” searchingforbirds.visualcinnamon.com 🐤
A project, an article, an exploration that dives into the data that connects humans with birds, by looking at how we search for birds.
An animated graphic showing wingbeats of different birds. This one is so beautiful.

Another night in a freezing, snow covered Richmond Park. Missed the full moon by a day. So cold I could hardly attach the lens to the tripod.
Went to see the Icicle Refrozen balloon ascent but from downwind at Greenham Common.
No free flights, only tethered so didn’t see a balloon BUT did explore the old Greenham Common air base which was spectacular
Not just a novelist, @ursulakleguin.com was also a cartographer. Her fictional geographies were on display this fall at London’s Architectural Association Gallery, and a companion book on Silver Press sheds new light on her peerless world-building. Read our interview with editor/curator Sarah Shin.

Back to mist covered mornings in Bushy Park

Walking around Bushy Park this time of year is always interesting. Every path ends up blocked by a stag.
Storm over Surbiton
Work related shenanigans meant I failed to make this year’s @bcsmaps.bsky.social conference.
Very saddened.

I spoke all things cartography with my colleagues in the ‘DK Where to Go’ podcast. A less than ideal media choice to discuss a visual topic.
I discuss my favourite map, why maps lie, how we make maps and how a cartographer’s map joke created a town.

Two global maps. Map on left is projected mercator, showing the distortion at the poles. Map on right is of globe showing distortion based on "distance" from point on ground.
Maps are artistic scientific expressions, which is why I chose a career studying and making them. Here are some lemon-yellow Tissot's indicatrix brighten your day. Since all maps involve distortion, exploring these distortions can deepen your understanding of the map's subject.
