Getting involved this spring with @wildsight.bsky.social & its Toad Watch program as adult western toads begin crossing a busy Revelstoke road along the Columbia River to lay thousands of eggs 🐸
So far great success inputting data into Gaia GPS & helping a couple dozen toads cross safely 💚

A final thank you/mil gracias to David Dickson, Elena González & Santiago Sáez Moreno for making these sessions possible! @david-dickson.bsky.social @santiagosaez.bsky.social
Day 3/3
-beware of greenwashing: corporate ads/PR, government sustainability claims, event sponsorship
-look for vague language, partial disclosures, misleading visuals
-don’t “advertise” specific solutions
-focus on people & emotions
-tie climate issues to concrete places, rely on local experts
Day 2/3
-make the climate connection
-climate more than a weather story
-Canada strong in attribution science, BUT don’t need to wait for study to link event to climate
-use visuals reflecting threat
-highlight that climate makes heatwaves likelier & intensifies wildfire/rainfall/hurricanes/cyclones
🧵Handy takeaways from the 2026 Climate Newsroom hosted by @coveringclimatenow.org for Canadian journalists:
Day 1/3
-most Canadians alarmed by climate change
-don’t have to be climate expert to cover it
-localize, humanize, solutionize
-be critical of solutions
-NOT about “is climate change real?”
The latest episode of Wild Revelstoke gave a hoot to owls in town, including one recently rescued by the community after being found injured on the road. Hear why these raptors are my favourite animals EVER! 🦉

Huge thanks to @coveringclimatenow.org for hosting 3 informative, resource-packed sessions for reporting on climate - exclusively for Canadian journalists!
A ton of tools I have in my back pocket now for next time I take a crack at a solutions story. Great to see journos from 11 provinces join!

This week’s episode on Wild Revelstoke! 🦫
Discussed possibly the most symbolic Canadian creature & how its dams have become increasingly valued as nature-based solutions for irrigating land & mitigating drought, flood & wildfire 🪵

Stoked to get started next week & meet some new faces in this ever-important journo niche!
Shoutout to @coveringclimatenow.org for adding these extra sessions exclusively for Canadians.
Moving to Revelstoke, I noticed how calling the RAPP line about bears stirs debate.
Input from local govs & non-profits in BC shows that the message on when & how to report urban bears varies, as some communities work to manage bears themselves.

Shoutout to @tyolsen.bsky.social for working on this one with me - for bear season 2026! 🧸
Had the huge privilege of visiting this area with Amber Peters herself last October - can confirm it’s unlike anything else in the Revelstoke Valley. Still vividly remember seeing the bear rub trees & moose wallows 💚
Latest on Wild Revelstoke, I dove into the declining presence of southern mountain caribou around Revy & why it’s a critical time for safeguarding their future as environmental orgs take our federal government to court 🦌

An expert source, busy all week with media interviews for the same story, giving me kudos for being the only journalist so far to ask a less intuitive but pretty valuable question - that sure felt good 🥹
As someone who often accesses avalanche-prone backcountry in the winter - & spent many weeks in northern California growing up - I’m heartbroken by this nightmarish news & wishing these people’s families & responding SAR personnel the very best this week 🤍
Loved this line by Felix Horne:
“Without expertise and experience, wildfires are reported without the underlying climate context that fuels them. Energy stories lose their climate dimension. Pollution is treated as an unfortunate accident rather than a foreseeable harm from fossil fuel dependence.”
Why would you ever grow a raspberry under the shade of a solar panel? All will be revealed in our latest article: Agrivoltaics: Pairing Unlikely Bedfellows - pairing farming and solar - to the benefit of all, including, of course, the planet.

A very local, in-depth Wild Revelstoke episode about human-coyote conflict & tips for coexistence - securing attractants, guarding pets & toddlers, and instilling fear.
Highly timely as we enter coyote breeding season 🐺

The polar vortex that hit the U.S. & claimed 60 lives is reminiscent, for me, of the 2021 heat dome that killed 600 British Colombians.
Polar opposites on the weather spectrum, but both telling examples of how even North American society is unprepared for climate change-driven temperature extremes.
🐦 💘 It's the season for lovebirds! 💘 🦅
But ... which bird? From the iconic goose to the snowy owl, from monogamous to poly, there’s got to be one out there for you. Our Valentine's Day quiz will reveal the Canadian bird that best meets your relationship needs.
My thoughts tonight are with the people of Tumbler Ridge, B.C. A devastating day for any community & especially a tight-knit one of just a couple thousand people. May these residents & families have the time & space to mourn & heal.
Last week, Wild Revelstoke dove into the fascinating lives of woodpeckers, uniquely-engineered avians that are homebuilders for many other species, but critically depend on survival of our old-growth forests 🐦

A warm spell late this January has brought remarkably-different temperatures & snowpack to lower elevations around Revelstoke than what I experienced here in January 2025. Not to worry, though - fresh snow continues to fall even as the degrees crank up above freezing this winter! ☃️

Possibly one of the most random stories I’ve ever written.
Someone smashed open our newspaper’s cash box… with a coconut!
But for a few dollars they stole, as I wrote, the coconut-cocked thief may have actually spent more just to buy the drupe fruit itself 🥥
