We developed two new tools for mapping Zarr data:
zarr-layer renders a wide range of datasets with little or no modification. And topozarr adds multiscale overviews and web-friendly chunking to datasets while maintaining projection and resolution. carbonplan.org/blog/zarr-la...

Super interesting which structures in the data are emphasized or suppressed between these!
NCAR is the backbone of Earth system science in the US and a global leader in open climate research. It directly supports our mission. Alongside a wide range of peers in the scientific research community, we submitted a letter to NSF strongly opposing any efforts to dismantle or restructure NCAR.
Me and my friend Ryan have algorithmically found the longest line of sight on Earth alltheviews.world
We made our own state of the art algorithm in Rust and SIMD. It took 100s of AMD Turin cores, 100s of GBs of RAM, a few TBs of disk and 2 days of constant runtime on multiple machines.
It’s a reminder that whataver world follows our experiment on the planet it could be as vastly different as the one that preceded this Triassic climate spasm, and that our legacy will live on, not only in the fossil record, but perhaps even in the topography of the mountains of the far future.
A view of the dolomites looming over Cortina
Not really a thread guy but an interesting thing about the mountains around Cortina and throughout the Italian Alps is that they’re fundamentally shaped by global warming, only it happened 234 million years ago
Chicago is the capital city of the Great American Damp Zone.
Glad this is finally out! I had a lot of fun working on the frontend for this tool.
Today we’re launching Open Climate Risk, a fully open option for U.S. building-level climate risk data. It’s unique because it allows you to see not only risk scores, starting with wildfire, but also the complete underlying dataset, methods, and codebase. carbonplan.org/research/cli...

if you work with geospatial and remotely sensed data — may I suggest trying out Browzarr to visualize and explore said data?

this is amazing work
Everything we've made will break, buildings and streets will crumble, and cities will be abandoned. But the CO₂ we emit into the atmosphere will persist for centuries, and the climatic impacts will last longer than human civilization has existed. This is our legacy for the future.
Should be working again now!
Verra recently announced that more than half of the credits from the Kariba REDD+ project don’t represent real climate benefits. Our new commentary explains why carbon market participants should treat Verra’s proposed solution to excess crediting with skepticism.
Literally just ran into this! Restart fixed it...
really amazing job popularizing a couple of the biggest controversies in geology: why is there so much oxygen in the atmosphere right now? and will it stick around?
- Huge, maybe unprecedented, piles of sedimentary rocks on the continents trapping tons of carbon (fossil fuels!)
- Maybe not?? 😬
This book is so good
I wrote about how Earth's wobble causes our view of the skies to shift over time. Here's a paywall-free gift link. With @fparis.bsky.social and @iamrumz.bsky.social
Nearly 6 billion people live in the 101 countries that a recent study has identified as confronting a net decline in water supply — signaling enormous challenges for food production and a heightening risk of conflict and instability.

California’s offset program is not only deeply flawed, it also costs the state hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue. We dive into the details in a new commentary. carbonplan.org/research/off... (1/7)
A relief map showing the landforms of Madison, WI. Elevations are showin in a pink-to-pale yellow gradient, and the whole thing has a semi-watercolor effect.
A detail of the downtown part of the map, with a handful of features labeled.
An abandoned project from last year. I planned on a "Landforms of #Madison" map, but got stuck at the labeling stage because almost none of these features have names I could find. Maybe a 15–20 across the whole map. The state capitol sits on a big unnamed hill. This has downstream effects… (1/2)

Raphael Hagen & @shaneloeffler.com from @carbonplan.org share how they went about visualizing GeoParquet data directly in the web browser.

How did I not know about this???? It works amazingly well - select 'transactions' and then just whack in a company name. Massively under-used resource here
We spent an entire paddling season researching and paddling across the Twin Cities to create this guide. The Star Tribune has never put out a guide this comprehensive. Get out on the water, people. It's really the best thing you can do this summer.

Effective immediately, the PGC is no longer accepting new NSF-supported requests due to a lack of renewal funding. Current work is wrapping up. Please contact your NSF program officer if impacted. We’re grateful to have supported your polar research. Read our full statement at www.pgc.umn.edu

Last week I was playing around with a new "tree ring plot" to visualize daily global temperature anomalies from ERA5.
I thought it would be neat to make a version of the plot for daily global absolute temperatures (rather than anomalies):
Want to know how fossil fuel companies use carbon offsets to claim they’re fighting climate change?
We've updated OffsetsDB — our offsets database — to allow you to search by carbon credit user. Search "Shell" and see what offsets they're using and when. (1/4) carbonplan.org/research/off...
