The notion that Orban was “right” on migration needs to be dispelled. His unilateral border fences created a colossal market for smugglers on the Balkan Route and prompted humanitarian crises in Serbia and Bosnia as routes diverged. A beggar thy neighbour policy.

Quite apart from the suffering inflicted by violent police pushbacks and starving families in border transit zones.

💥🇭🇺🗳️ BREAKING: Péter Magyar says Viktor Orbán called to concede and congratulate him.

Magyar will be Hungary’s next prime minister and, as it stands, is set to secure a 2/3 supermajority – enough to fully dismantle Orbán’s system.

A 16-year chapter is over.

As the father of a middle schooler I have seen the rebellion against AI forming there — even using “that’s AI, bro,” not indicating something is literally AI, but that something is metaphorically so — it’s sus, it’s bullshit, it’s bad weird

Great social media policy for the BBC small boats correspondent to keep allowing comments under his posts on X. Fruitful engagement.

There is no ceasefire in Lebanon. Israel has been bombing Lebanon non-stop since last night. If anything Israel is expanding its war on Lebanon.

"Under a 10-20 year system, a worker would spend a decade or more in which their entire immigration status — and [thus] their family’s home, their children’s schooling, their right to remain — depends on maintaining the goodwill of a single employer. That is a structurally coercive relationship."

I’ve been to Kanjiza. A decade ago he would have probably pulled the same trick and blamed it on refugees. This time it will be Ukraine and therefore, by his logic, the opposition.

Yes indeed, the language in Preston’s excuse is quite evasive. He used AI to “expand” and “smooth” and “tidy up” his review. No actually, you used a product notoriously defined by plagiarism which duly nicked someone else’s words and put them under your name in the New York Times!

Why is the Frontline Club hosting apologists for Putin and Assad?

Sadly I’m less baffled. The day job angle still intrigues me but really AI is fucking poison that encourages otherwise good writers, like Alex Preston, care less about writing. Anyway thanks for your fair and human-powered Substack on the matter.

He has not held said marquee publication in much esteem. He sounds rich, by most people’s metrics, and instead he outsourced his writing. He says he was rushed. Why? Up against it at the hedge fund? Writing a report on the advantages of AI? Would a less privileged full time writer take such a risk?

I assume it is a busy job that might take priority over writing a book review, and I’m going to confidently guess it pays a bit more. Also, I notice he co-authored a report last month for the hedge fund on…”the hidden risks and opportunities of the AI bubble.”

Do you think that Alex Preston’s day job at one of the world’s biggest hedge funds has any bearing on this scandal?

Because BBC thinks if it puts “migrant crime” at the top of the running order then the Mail and Twitter banshees will cease their howling and applaud the national broadcaster for their balanced coverage.
