Lake waits for Heliotrope to speak. Eventually, she says, “I’m sorry about the room,” to which Lake quickly replies “That doesn’t matter.” Heliotrope doesn’t say anything in response to that. Lake tries again with a small smile, “Was there anything else you wanted to know…? About witches, or fairies, or…” Heliotrope says nothing. Lake’s shoulders and face drop and he picks at his cuticles nervously. He looks up with a morose expression. “I’m sorry I lied to you, back when you woke up. I thought it would be better. But it wasn’t fair. So I promise I’ll tell you the truth from now on, no matter what. Even if it sucks. I’ll answer any questions you have. Okay?” His speech bubble morphs into a hazy recollection of when Lake had been leaning over Heliotrope back in the alleyway, echoing the word “Okay?” Heliotrope finally looks up, her eyes red from crying. In a small voice, she repeats, “Okay,” and starts to shuffle around to face Lake, though she still tucks her knees up to her chest. She keeps her eyes down for a moment, but eventually glances up, her mouth still buried in her own hug. “Um… so how long have you been a vampire?”

“Ten years,” Lake replies. Heliotrope says “Oh…” with a somewhat disappointed look, to which Lake nervously responds “Uh… Sorry?” Heliotrope: “No, it’s fine, I just thought you might say, like, a century or something…” Lake softens with a smile. “Sorrel is a hundred!” Heliotrope perks up. “Really??” Lake: “A hundred and nineteen.” Heliotrope: “Wow…” She pulls a face imitating Sorrel and holds her hands up in a pantomime of a scary movie vampire. “Is that why he’s such a grumpy guts? (Bleh!)” Lake laughs, imitating the gesture. “Totally. (Bleh.)” Heliotrope smiles back at him, then motions to her face without thinking. She takes a closer look at her fingers, then feels the top of her head, craning to look around the room, before turning back to Lake. “Where are my glasses?” Lake: “Glasses? Do you need them?” Heliotrope squints at her hand in front of her face. “I guess not… I can see fine. Did going vampire fix my eyesight?” Lake waves a hand at his own jaw. “Yeah. And your teeth, and muscles, and like… your spine… I dunno. Stuff moves. It’s weird. But cool. Sorry about your glasses. They probably got lost in the attack.” Heliotrope’s eyes darken. “What was it that really attacked me?” Lake, morose: “A werewolf. But it was… sick. Most werewolves aren’t like that.” Heliotrope launches forward to her knees, planting her hands on the floor. “Werewolves are real too??” Lake: “Yeah!” Helio: “Are they, like, our rivals?” Lake: “Huh? Not really…” Helio: “So in this universe, we’re allies…” Lake: “Uh… not exactly… (This universe?) But most people don’t really like vampires.” Heliotrope, incensed: “What!? Why not?? ‘Cause of the blood stuff??” Lake, shrugging: “I mean, yeah?” Heliotrope pauses a moment in thought. “Okay, that’s fair.” Lake smiles.

Heliotrope turns back to Lake with a sly expression. “So… can vampires actually turn into bats, or is that just for TV?” Lake raises his arms and takes a dramatic pause, smirking, before bursting into a swarm of spectral bats, dissipating from the waist of his still-crossed legs on the floor to fly upwards in a gust. The motion blusters Heliotrope’s hair back as she stares, gobsmacked, watching as the swarm of bats make an arc up over her head to collapse onto the bed beside them as Lake re-forms into his humanoid appearance. He flips upright on the mattress and strikes a cool (not cool) pose at which Heliotrope loses her absolute mind.
