God, it does make me wonder now what would have happened if Yoon was still in power...

5. I also look back at the first month of Lee Jae Myung's presidency, which has been going smoothly for the most part. Here is the Spotify link. The podcast is also available on Apple Podcasts and most other popular podcast apps. open.spotify.com/episode/4V4R...
4. Particularly with demographic challenges, ie their core older base dying out, it's hard to see where the party will get votes going forward.
3. However, their unwillingness to change appears to be catching up to them now, with their approval rating falling to 19 percent, lower than during the entire martial law crisis and impeachment.
2. Despite the martial law crisis, Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment, and an presidential election loss, the party elites seem unwilling to let go of their grip on power and embrace reform, buoyed by a better than expected election result.
1. New episode of the Korean Politics Debrief podcast out now! It's part 2 of the interview with Prof. Song Se-ryun. This week, I ask is the People Power Party and Conservative party politics facing an existential crisis?

In this episode, I also celebrate the unremarkable milestone of the podcast reaching 100 subscribers on YouTube, despite the niche subject matter and my failure to properly promote the podcast π . Joking aside, I appreciate all the streams and downloads. π youtu.be/K2Tv3nf5rnQ
A new podcast it out! In this first Korean Politics Debrief episode since the election, I talk to Law Prof. Song Se-ryun, who compares Lee Jae Myung to a broomstick! π π§Ή We also discuss his first days in office, the pitfalls he needs to avoid, and more.

Polls close at 8pm KST, which is when exit polls will be announced. Ballot counting will start around 8.30pm. Networks are expected to call the race as early as 10pm if the margin of victory is as wide as past opinion polls suggested, but it's probably likely to be nearer 12am.
Election day is upon us. Check out the second half of the latest Korean Politics Debrief podcast for what to look out for as results are called this evening:

4. Will Lee Jun-seok break 10%? What will it mean for conservative politics if he does?
5. When will the results be called? In 2022, result was called by media approx. 3.20am. In 2017, approx. 2am. It's expected that the result will be called fairly quickly.
2. Will Lee Jae-myung get over 50% of vote? If he doesn't that could lead to little to no honeymoon period for new administration.
3. Will Kim Moon-soo be within 10 percentage points of LJM? If not, what could that mean for the future of the PPP?
My final pre-election thoughts for the Korean Politics Debrief podcast! I give a quick review of the recent TV debates, and then some things to look out for on election day:
1. Turnout - What does a high or low turnout tell us about the election?

This is crazy. The Korean conservatives are literally airing their dirty laundry in public, trying to negotiate who will be their candidate in the presidential race, which they are currently on track to lose anyway.
Thanks for inviting me, @kwonjangho.bsky.social. Since we recorded this, Kim Moon-soo secured the PPP nomination. I remain skeptical about his appeal to moderate voters, & whether he can improve his standing against LJM. I also expect HDSβ late entry to further fragment the conservative vote.
Han has a serious hill to climb to win. But Lee Jae-myung's judicial liabilities are making that climb significantly less steep than it probably should be. Han's initial support in public opinion polls was weak, but we'll have to see what they look like after Lee's Supreme Court ruling. end
One of Han Duck-sooβs supposed strengths was that he is from Honam, the southwest region of Korea around Gwangju and the stronghold of the Democratic Party. It was hoped that Han would syphon off votes in the area that typically would go to Lee Jae-myung. 1/

Yea, I mean I know they think he can win over moderates, but to think they can win over Honam voters... They're starting to drink their own Kool-aid I fear.
