Congrats to @wlufa.bsky.social on making gains for their contract faculty unit in their recent round of bargaining.

These are important steps towards ensuring #fairness4cf across our province and ending the gigifications of teaching in #onpse.

Following the recent Member ratification vote, WLUFA’s Contract Faculty Members at Laurier are set to make some gains, but there is still more work to do to address precarity and advance fairness for Contract Faculty across the sector. tinyurl.com/cfsmdoa @ocufa.bsky.social #Fairness4CF

Too many contract faculty are hired term-to-term, paid less than their peers for the same teaching, & denied benefits. That instability affects faculty and students.

Ontario's universities are being forced to operate under conditions that no public system should endure. Minor tweaks will not fix the problem. #Ontario’s universities are the lowest funded in Canada, increasingly relying on contract faculty.

@ocufa.bsky.social President Rob Kristofferson’s op-ed digs further into the precarious employment of our contract faculty. #Fairness4CF tinyurl.com/cfsmdoa

Universities power Ontario’s economy and communities, but a system built on precarious work cannot deliver the education students deserve.

It’s time to stop the gigification of teaching.

Why is this happening?

Ontario funds its universities less per student than any other province, leaving institutions to fill the gap by relying on precarious contract labour.

The result: bigger classes, heavier workloads, and fewer supports for students.

Walk into many Ontario university classrooms today and you’ll see a system under strain: overcrowded classes, overstretched instructors, and growing instability.

More and more teaching is being done on short-term contracts.

This is the gigification of teaching. 🧵 #Fairness4CF

Very proud of @ontariotechu.bsky.social! We are an exciting, vibrant place to be!

With that said, I hope OTU gets serious about negotiating a new contract with faculty. Let's avoid the same fate as Laurentian and keep OTU's momentum going in a positive direction! Fully behind @uoitfa.bsky.social!

Decisions about academic plans should be made in consultation with those of us who are in the labs and classroom delivering the high-quality education that Ontario Tech has become known for – so why was this issue not brought before OTU’s academic decision makers at January’s Academic Council?

2 months ago 2 0 0 0

This is the second time this year that a strategic update was moved behind closed doors. We all know that issues can emerge when University Governors make decisions in isolation, without including the University's biggest stakeholders: its faculty, staff and students.

Ontario Tech's Board of Governors is shutting the community out of important conversations regarding Enrolment and the University’s Differentiated Growth Agenda – plans stemming from this conversation could directly impact our teaching and learning conditions.

My thoughts go out to LU Faculty; I hope they can come to a swift, beneficial resolution. I feel for the students who will be disrupted. A strike is always a last resort, but often there is no other choice.

I'm hopeful OTU can avoid the same fate. I'm 100% behind our awesome Faculty Association!
