Don’t forget lecturing the Pope about theology.

They claimed all these guys were stranded in Vietnam who manifestly were not. Deliberate undermining of government credibility.
Pope who knows the Karl Rove “We’re an empire now, and when we act we create our own reality” quote.
This is well known to Bruce diehards and VVAW people but flies under the radar because it was before Bruce became an icon in 1984.
The guy who bankrolled all this? One H. Ross Perot.
I am aware that this has not been corrected and these flags continue to fly.
Yes I meant that it was so influential at the time that these things happened but yes I am also aware they have not been corrected.
Meanwhile Springsteen had to do a concert in 1981 to keep the actual veterans association from folding.
Yes connected to the fictional POW/MIA movement which had highways named after it and flags flying over government buildings.
The Yankees only do this unintentionally through the manager’s choice of inspiring videos.
The Mets have had multiple nostalgia nights in recent years honoring embarrassing moments in their history.
No choice now but to release Ella McCay 2 in summer of ‘28: At age 36, she becomes President of the country in which she was born and raised.
Bruce Springsteen, who was inspired by the plight of Vietnam vets, has spent a significant amount of time, including current tour, pushing back against these narratives.
Distinctive style/language emerging here.
SMH Blue Man Group moving to Atlanta just like every Hollywood production.
The Reagan landslide in ‘84, the Rambo sequels (among other movies), and multiple wars about this issue.
When our innocence and naïveté about things like our country get shattered the mature thing to do is reflect on that, not constantly search for One Weird Trick to make it better.

As we commemorate the first anniversary of Pope Francis’s death this week, resharing my @commonwealmagazine.org piece centering his cinephilia:
Press scrum on a flight a very appropriate setting to commemorate Francis.
Trump attacking Leo heightened contradictions even further. If Barron cuts bait on Trump it enrages many of his donors, and he himself has a hard time rationalizing anything that would help Dems. So he just contorts himself further and further.
Leo getting elected after Francis also complicated things since it wasn’t
what these guys were expecting. They wanted someone who would quietly let them speak for the American church and softpedal inconvenient things Francis pushed. That didn’t happen despite efforts to kill Prevost candidacy.
There are a certain number of these people who think, essentially, that Dobbs was worth it and admitting Trump is bad would lead to a Dem landslide reversing those gains and bringing in the Woke Reich. That mentality, I think, explains the actions of Barron and conspicuous silence of Dolan.
Trump immediately became a problem her because his vulgarity and violent language pushed more people (at the least) into the neutral camp and convinced even some of them to rationalize voting for Democrats. Those who stayed in the R camp became increasingly corrupted and/or deranged.
The idea was to use the whole nonnegotiable vs. prudential judgment strategy to support Republicans and marginalize Democrats, but keep away from war/peace stuff since like capital punishment papal teaching in this area has become increasingly inconvenient.
Barron represents a whole approach to U.S. Catholic politics collapsing under its own contradictions. The article from the Pillar guys part of the same basic phenomenon.
The problem is this post-Moses trend in treating the "community" as if it's monolithic and knows more about transportation planning than the experts. We as a society can say "more transit good, road expansion bad" and ask locals to weigh in on where staircases go, not "should this even happen?"
MAGA si, magistra no
Totally authentic because it’s bone deep for Leo also.
