So You Wanna Start An Anime Magazine

Hosted by Samantha Ferreira

The anime community lives and dies on the passion of its members. From the fanzines of the ‘80s, to elaborate Geocities shrines of the ‘90s, to the AniTubers of the ‘00s, there has always been a group of folks who’ve rolled up their sleeves, and gotten their hands dirty to spread the word of fandom. Many of these intrepid fans persevered through a combination of passion, grit, and a heck of a lot of learning by the seat of their pants. In its early days, though, the anime media landscape was vastly different, though. Publications like Anime-Zine, Protoculture Addicts, and Animag gave way to Animerica, Anime Insider, and Newtype USA. These publications provided vital news and commentary for the growing community, while providing a time capsule of their era.As the years went on, though, the anime world has changed, and the humble magazine has begun to evolve for this new era.Samantha Ferreira founded Anime Herald in 2010, and launched Anime Herald Magazine in 2025. In this panel, she aims to provide a brief history of the anime magazine, while pulling back the curtain as she discusses just what makes for a successful anime publication, and outlines the many pitfalls and “things to know” with regards to starting an anime magazine in the modern era.

That 2008 Feeling: Exploring the Era of the 2000s Anime Bubble

Hosted by Samantha Ferreira

In the beginning, the anime community was small, scattered, and quiet; cons like Anime Boston were but a pipe dream, and the "newest anime" was whatever your local connection could scrounge together. Suddenly, in 1998, a Pikachu-shaped meteor crashed into the fandom, causing seismic ripples that would reshape the industry today. In the years that followed, the quirky subculture we all knew and loved would blossom into a behemoth, as new fans entered the hobby by the thousands, and publishers scrambled to keep them happy. It seemed like the great times would last forever, though if one put their ear to the ground, they could hear the sounds of a bubble that was getting ready to burst... Samantha Ferreira delivers an on-the-ground chronicle of the 2000s anime bubble, combining years of research and contemporary sources, to paint a picture of the times leading up to and through the period, and the immediate aftermath.

Today is Trans Day of Visibility, but even after it is over trans individuals will continue to exist and be seen in practically every aspect of your life.

They will not “return” to being invisible; they shouldn’t be expected to, and removing them would make life worse in ways that affect all of us.

A picture of my Mii over a bird doing standup comedy saying "Yawning Cryptid Raid!" In the next panel, Fangy's picture is placed over a heckler saying "Booo! Get better material!" The third panel cuts back to my Mii over the bird completely unable to think of anything. The final panel reveals that all my material is just "Yawning Cryptid Raid!"

This really really sucks actually, no matter what you think about the game. Years and years and years of development and talent flushed down the drain. My heart goes out to everyone affected.

This shouldn’t be how art is made.

Game #1 of 2026: Hollow Knight: Silksong by Team Cherry

I didn't expect this to take me so long but after 80 hours, I finally finished the game. Another amazing experience from this series. Only thing I didn't care for was grinding for shards. Can't wait to play the DLC.

I spent six hours streaming on NYE trying to do it but I finally succeeded tonight. After 707 hours on Steam (plus more on Switch and Gamepass), I have finally cleared A20H in Slay the Spire!

I also managed to actually beat the Transient on this run as well so it's like a double miracle.

A version of the "What Should We Do?" meme that ends with the guy getting thrown out the window. Fangy asks chat what the raid message should be. Sunny and Ariel both don't have anything. I suggest "Yawning Cryptid Raid!" and for that, Fangy throws me out the window.

Another meme of @fangy.maidsofengland.co.uk (with @arielaria.bsky.social and @sunnyraoul.bsky.social ) showing why I'm not invited to Teasing Cryptid Tuesday. At least I get to spread the truth of #yawngate.
