Controversial to some, but at least it gets the debate started on how to move forward and make things better.
Happy to have been able to contribute with a catalogue piece on the archaeology of medieval sex work! (As part of my MSCA project)
Posts by Maxime Poulain
Led by a collective of sexworkers, it explores the deep and more recent history of the profession and the legal frameworks that have tried to regulate it: from brothels in Nazi concentration camps to the effects of the current Prostitutes Protection Act. A rare perspective from the inside!

Still life of fruit, with the Supper at Emmaus: the only known painting of Guilliam de Vries (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, inv. nr. 2290).
🧑🎨What trash tells us about a 17th-century Antwerp painter:
🏺Only one painting survives of the ill-known Guilliam de Vries, but objects excavated in his backyard and a probate inventory together give fresh insight.

Medieval Bruges: come for the art, stay for the parasites. 🏰
Our new study of a 15th-century apothecary and Spanish traders uncovers a city brimming with global goods: silks, spices, perfume sprinklers, olives, rice… and yes, an African parasite.

A Medieval Brothel, a Baby’s Grave, and a New Perspective on Motherhood - research led by @mpoulain.bsky.social www.medievalists.net/2025/05/medi... #medieval

🏺 New research just published! 🧪
A rare case from a 14th-century brothel in Aalst reveals an infant that was likely breastfed and buried with care — challenging long-held assumptions about medieval sex workers and infanticide.
