Universities directly impact local communities. Took my design students on a field trip to an oyster farm yesterday. They are working on alternative ecofriendly mitigation strategies for burrowing shrimp, which causes oyster beds to sink and suffocate. Also a worker safety hazard (think sink sand)🧪

We all need to become better critics of ‘quality’

I don’t agree. Impact can be impact, regardless on where it is published. A good assessment can focus on the science and not on the publication venue. I never submit to costly elite journals and still consider my work impactful

We need to change the incentives from numbers to quality. What would happen if promotion, awards, tenure were evaluated on some maximum limited to 1-3 pieces of work? Prolific authors would need to be VERY selective on how to showcase the true value of their work.
