I haven’t read either column, but I suspect the titles are doing a lot of the work here, and we all know how rarely the author gets any input into a title for these pieces
📖NEW @ecfr.eu brief by @camillelons.bsky.social, @byfordt.bsky.social & @jonathanfulton.bsky.social: Chinese electric vehicle brands are adapting to Western trade barriers by increasing their presence in the MENA region. APNewsAlert: DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — #Iran issues its own ceasefire proposal, calling for war reparations and sovereignty over Strait of Hormuz.

New by me and Andrew England: Gulf leaders opposed a strike, but they are now caught between wanting the conflict to end and fear that — if Trump suddenly stops — the war will leave a wounded, emboldened and more hardline Iran.
Today, we're publishing Don't Steal This Book - a (mostly) empty book from almost 10,000 authors, protesting the theft of their work by AI companies.

When Wang Yi came to the Gulf the China-GCC FTA was high on his agenda. In my latest column for AGBI I write about why I don't see a FTA any time soon: www.agbi.com/opinion/trad...
At a time when the Islamic Republic has lost most of its influence in the Middle East it looked especially vulnerable. That it gets to host troops from Russia, China, India and the rest of the SCO members gives Tehran a bit of a lift.
The SCO is running Sahand 2025 joint security exercises in Iran. Not to inflate the organizational significance of the SCO, but it does represent a well-timed gift for the Iranian government. chinamenanewsletter.substack.com/p/sco-runs-s...
I suspect a turn away from great power competition will result in a lot more regional competitions, and less predictability in international politics.
Nobody in the Western hemisphere wants to be part of a MAGA-led bloc, and most of Asia's advanced economies are repelled by Xi's PRC.
Since neither Trump nor Xi have especially compelling models for how the world's supposed to work, I don't see this spheres of influence model being very successful.
That the US is being terribly governed and mismanaging its international relations doesn't make up for the fact that the same is true for China.
I take issue with the triumphalism expressed by some of the Chinese think tankers and and academics here, but I haven't actually been to China since 2019, so maybe the mood is more optimistic than I hear from Chinese friends and colleagues.
