his is such a good write up (and also validates the "just be bayesian" approach [you get all the shrinkage and extensions to differing number of observations per subject for free!])

Nice clear presentation of commonplace meta-analysis failure mode: Pooling coefficients that mean different things, because original models had different adjustment sets. A coefficient gets its meaning from the whole model, not just from the predictor variable it multiplies.
I’ll be leaving PCI in May to begin a new postdoc, which means my current position will soon be open!
You’ll find the job advert below (in French). Please feel free to share it within your networks, and don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’d like more information!
Virtual Event April 16 // 1 pm ET NEW EVIDENCE ON REPRODUCIBILITY ACROSS SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH Moderator: Tim Errington Speakers: Katrin Auspurg, Abel Brodeur, and Andrew Tyner
What can large-scale studies tell us about reproducibility? In our webinar on April 16, researchers from COS, I4R, and META-REP will discuss findings from three papers—one from the recently published SCORE effort—and insights on reproducibility, transparency, and credibility

Save the date! The SORTEE Conference 2026 will be held virtually on Oct 13-14. Engage in sessions on open, reliable ecology and evolutionary biology practices. More details at https://www.sortee.org/past #conference
Universities: We teach critical thinking, and always ask for evidence, especially for extraordinary claims! 😤

Apparently we just need to replicate the damn study after all.
We must go further: redesign institutions, test causal interventions, and have national funders establish dedicated meta-research panels: an investment this field has long deserved.

My new piece "Reproducibility: how to strengthen a weak foundation" is out today @nature.com! 🎉 How reproducible is research in the social & behavioural sciences? A new study by Miske et al. assessed 600 papers across 62 journals: the results are sobering.

Worried about assuming causality when estimating selection? Confused about knowing whether selection is hard or soft? We have the solution for you!
Academics, what's the longest you've had to wait between a faculty application and getting an invitation to interview?
Outputs accepted or modified by you Inputs sent to GitHub Copilot, including code snippets shown to the model Code context surrounding your cursor position Comments and documentation you write File names, repository structure, and navigation patterns Interactions with Copilot features (chat, inline suggestions, etc.) Your feedback on suggestions (thumbs up/down ratings)
Critical for anyone who uses GitHub - if you've used GitHub Copilot at all, Microsoft is about to start putting basically all of your code and the entire trajectory of all actions you took into training. You need to opt out by April 24th. github.blog/news-insight...

Think this is cool? @sarah-dobson.bsky.social is soon to finish her PhD and looking for a post-doc, so don't miss out on a chance to recruit her!
What kind of data do you need for this? If you have traits repeatedly measured across individuals, and ideally across spatial or temporal contexts (e.g. over years) then you can apply this approach.
Finally, we show a nice worked example from the Rum Red Deer project @rumdeerresearch.bsky.social.
In this preprint, we outline how decomposing selection gradients across different hierarchical levels can give important insights relating to causality and hard vs soft selection.
We then demonstrate how you can use multivariate models to decompose directional selection gradients.

Should we use error checking tools like Statcheck and GRIM to automatically check for errors in studies in meta-analyses?
I wrote a blog post with some insights from a hackathon where we scrutinized this idea.

FAIR data and code is both the most boring part of Open Science, and the part that will most fundamentally change how science is done.
This gap is regrettable, but understandable. Most scientists can't imagine what their science would be like if research outputs were FAIR.
We have a new record 🚨 the warm month of march in the Netherlands had its effect on the first laying date of the Great tits! Breaking the record by two days the first egg date this year is 21st March. One blue tit went even beyond that and noted a first egg date on 19th of march! #breedingseason2026
🚨🚨 Breaking news from Wytham Woods: The 80th year of data collection of the long-term tit study officially started today with this nest with 3 Blue Tit eggs (pic: @mcmahok.bsky.social). First egg inferred 23 March which is our earliest EVER nest - beating the previous record of 26 March by 3 days!🚨🚨
