A ★★★★ review of Ant-Man (2015) The Road to Doomsday Aside from the iffy racial stereotypes that really shouldn’t have been a thing in 2015 and are completely indefensible, this is a very fun entry in the MCU that almost feels like ...

Ant-Man balances action, humour and heart in a way that feels really sincere and therefore helps make it all the more enjoyable. The special effects are incredible, Paul Rudd is great in the lead role, and there are so many fun set pieces throughout. boxd.it/dA0b39

I really wish I had watched Luke Cage Season 1 sooner, it’s phenomenal! The club performances, the action scenes, the many twists and turns, the performances, this is amongst the best of Marvel’s TV shows and I’m really hoping the titular character is reintroduced in the MCU soon!

Daredevil Season 2 is superior to its already phenomenal first season in every way possible. Loved it when it was first released, and it holds up so well on a rewatch – the introductions to The Punisher and Elektra are incredible with perfect casting for both characters!

If anyone has noticed my Instagram, my podcast, Rise of the Gay Cinephile’s IG and the one for my film festival, GASP! have disappeared, it’s because all three have been suspended. I have absolutely no idea why but I thought I’d put this out there so people know I haven’t randomly blocked them.

A ★★★★★ review of If I Had Legs I'd Kick You (2025) If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is a dramedy following a woman on the verge of a breakdown as she must cope with her daughter's illness, an absent husband, a missing person, and an unusual relationship wit...

I also watched If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, a masterclass in dealing with mental health on film, a phenomenal piece of filmmaking that perfectly balances comedy, drama & thriller. Byrne delivers a career-best performance that is at the top of the reasons as to why this is a must-watch. boxd.it/dnUwFD

Watched two fantastic new releases recently! First up, The Testament of Ann Lee, which is a compelling historical feminist musical epic that is one of the most visually impressive films to be released so far this year, Seyfried is phenomenal at the centre of this near-perfect film! boxd.it/dlYqFH

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 isn’t as good as the first season but it’s still great, a fun, well written and entertaining season that provides interesting new story arcs for arcs of the returning characters, whilst also introducing some great new characters too.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is a fine sci-fi action film that’s dragged down by pacing issues, unfunny humour, the big focus on just setting up future projects, and a forced romance, but the great cast, excellent CGI and interesting themes help prevent it from turning into a bad film. boxd.it/dmPE0p

Anyways, that’s my Scream 7 take. Rant over.

1 month ago 0 0 0 0

As much as I’m a fan of Williamson and Campbell, supporting them & their comeback wouldn’t feel right considering it came at the price of the franchise losing a genuinely fantastic character and Barrera losing a job because she’s on the right side of history and isn’t afraid to speak out about it.

Scream is my joint first (with Elm Street) favourite franchise but I can’t bring myself to pay to see Scream 7. What happened to Melissa Barrera was bad enough as it is but throw in all of the AI usage too (for a film that’s apparently about the dangers of AI?) & what you get is an embarrassing mess

So if Paramount are fine with stealing from artists to use AI for their Scream 7 marketing, they’ll be fine with people waiting until the film is available to illegally download online so we can steal from them too, right?

Jessica Jones Season 1 is top-tier Marvel TV, with 13 dark, violent and intense episodes with phenomenal performances from Krysten Ritter and David Tennant. It incorporates themes of abuse, PTSD, and trauma perfectly into its compelling story and neo-noir style.

Rogue One is amongst the best films of the franchise, a big-scale blockbuster with a lot of heart, some truly gorgeous cinematography, fantastic characters and a Darth Vader scene that is within my top 3 favourite Star Wars moments. Andor Season 2 was somehow even better than the first season. A hard-hitting, mind-blowing and utterly compelling season that further cements this show as the most grounded thing to come from Star Wars, with important themes and allegories that hit so hard right now given the world we live in.

Daredevil Season 1 is a refreshing change for the MCU (it’s definitely cannon now), providing gritty, violent and genuinely intense street level storylines with perfect casting for the titular character and Kingpin, dark and atmospheric cinematography, and expertly shot fight scenes.

Wuthering Heights is a film with three lanes – three lanes, an adaptation of the novel, a blockbuster romance and a David Cronenberg-inspired erotic thriller – but the balance is so off to the point it becomes a badly paced mess that is afraid of going too far with any of its ideas. boxd.it/d8SfcP

Little Amélie is a beautiful, tender and touching film that tells its story through a child’s point of view, which allows for some brilliantly weird moments without sacrificing how grounded it is. Sincere, sweet and compelling, this great piece of animation is a must-watch. boxd.it/d7LYUJ

It took me so long to start Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but I am so glad I’ve finally gotten around to it. Season 1 started off fine, but by the time it finished, I was fully invested and on the edge of my seat. Incredible TV with great characters, great twists & turns, and great pacing.
