Friend looked into how that intro scene for DMC4 is rendered, and they're just rendering both scenes simultaneously and masking with a black tri as necessary. Brute forcey but MTFramework handles it like a champ.

Yes, the physics&math of modern 3d technology come w/ constraints. It's harder, by comparison, to create past "default realism". That said, I think "expressionism" in games goes unnoticed because so much of games is steeped deeply in it. We tend to notice it more when its contrasted by "realism"

There is no "inherent" style to videogames. They all start from nothing, unlike humans in front of a camera. In fact, given modern tools like UE metahuman and photogrammetry asset packs, "realism" is a much more immediate starting point than any stylized, tailored look.

I'd guess this is due to some veterans graduating to leadership/direction. Less art MAKING, and more the leading of artists and reviewing of work. Detached from the process, the results (and how quickly/cheaply you get there) become more important. OFC this isn't sustainable.

I'm sympathetic if you learn the style of your favorite artist, but there's one r18 artist who repeatedly copies, then abandons styles. CSR, others, and now Hinto. Since they've used AI in the past, i wonder if they're even "copying, the old-fashioned way. 🤔

I hope it makes some sense that im drawing a separation here on the quality of the Design and problem solving of UI, and what the player feels having to deal with it. Good UI for a poor system will be a suboptimal experience for the player, except in the rare cases where somehow UI "saves" it.
