Le Monde offered me the opportunity to share my thoughts on the French municipal elections and what it says about the green agenda.
Tltr: The topic disappeared from public debates but is anchored in local action everywhere - enough to structure a green majority soon?⤵️

We contribute to better understanding the impact of real-world stimuli about carbon inequality, esp. their reception across ideological lines.
Results exemplify how messaging on climate issues can resonate differently across audiences - something important for org. like Oxfam et al. who use them.
The treatment even reduced support for private jets bans among anti-elite voters (esp. far-right)!
=> Elite-targeting policies may be decoded not simply as redistributive interventions, but as moral performances whose legitimacy is contested among voters with strong anti-establishment orientations
Support also increases for a progressive policy constraining short-haul flights for all, which places relatively greater constraints on higher-frequency flyers. But we find no effect on policies that disproportionately impose costs on individuals (e.g. carbon tax).
We find no effect of the information treatment on policy support at the population level.
Instead, we observe heterogeneity across (anti-elite) partisan divides.
Support rises for elite-targeting policies among supporters of mainstream parties compared to supporters of anti-elite parties.
In this (short) research article, we present evidence from a survey experiment where we test whether making salient the
carbon emissions of private jet use by super-rich elites alters respondents’ policy support.
Instead of using unrealistic stylised facts, we show them real headlines from Le Monde
🚨New working paper🚨
Does media exposure to carbon inequality affect support for climate policies?
With @marysanford.bsky.social & @julienpicard.bsky.social, we show that it depends on pre-existing political preferences, with voters split along populist/anti-elite lines.

One fossil fuel crisis costs the UK more than shifting to net zero by 2050. And how many more such crises can we expect in the next 24 years?

Why are we observing a 'green backlash' when serious efforts to decarbonise have scarcely begun? I'm happy to share my working paper, 'The Political Consequences of Climate Ambition: Evidence from Australia', which analyses how voters respond prospectively to proposed climate policies. Brief 🧵:

This research contributes to a broader understanding of public policy & individuals’ attitudes beyond the case of climate . By emphasizing the role of symbolic policies, we provide better insight into how people respond to governmental action, and highlight dimensions beyond material self-interest.
Through a mixed-methods approach (survey experiments + interviews in FR), we move beyond simple cost-based explanations and show how SP can significantly increase support for CP. We also show that SP increase perceptions of fairness, elite behavior, & government credibility among the public
An e.g. of a "symbolic policy" (SP): requiring members of the govt to travel by train instead of plane.
In parallel to the SP, the govt could enact a costly (and efficient) policy (CP) - e.g. reduction of speed limits or carbon tax.
We argue that the SP would make the CP significantly more accepted
We define symbolic policies as policies with minimal material impacts but which send meaningful messages to the public. And we argue that they have the potential to increase support for costly policies by shifting the message that the latter carry - for instance by signaling elite exemplarity.
