Who is this eighteenth-century Spanish reader marking up English dramatic criticism in an early C18 Tonsons editions of the works of #Addison?
In 2014 I published an article on (among other things) the library of John Hunter, a Scottish merchant and consul in C18 Spain. Part of his library made its way to the library at the @RealAcademiaES, where his 1787 Burns *Poems* has since been digitised:

Typo alert! It's 8 February 2026!
Ok, networked academics, show me your magic.
What does "M.F.L." stand for? Given the number of Irish churchmen and other Irish immigrants in C18 Spain, the bookplate could be Spanish or Irish.

Mysteriously--for an open call of international scope--the documents for applicants are almost entirely exclusively in Catalan. Still: trust the Force, and Google Translate, and give it a go.
My own department has only one member of teaching staff specialised in anything pre-1830s. We need more.
My university is hiring up to twenty full professors in three broadly defined fields, including Humanities. Candidates will be screened by heads of department, who will vet applicants for the next phase.
The deadline is 8 February 2025.

It tilts heavily towards the present; and the older periods are spotted, in their panels, with talks relating something very old to something very new (neo-Victorian fiction, new productions of C16 plays).

(AEDEAN is the national English Studies association.)
Perhaps fewer than 10% of the literature talks are on pre-1600 topics, about 15% on the 19th century, and 75% on everything after 1900.
In a moany-groany sort of voice, #becauseHalloween:
My specialty is nearly dead in Spanish academe, according to anecdotal if reliable data. In the annual #AEDEAN conference, the number of panel talks on the #eighteenthcentury has, apparently (I could squint a bit longer), dropped to zero.
Seems to be a tiny mouse (other suggestions gratefully received) hitching a ride on this fifteenth-century manicule. In a copy of Aristotle’s Nichomachean Ethics, printed at Barcelona c. 1473. Now @theulspeccoll.bsky.social Inc.3.H.3.3[3472].

Dear colleagues,
Come join @DMWShakespeare (aka @dmwillshakespr) and me in Verona! In keeping with the conference theme on Planetary Shakespeare, and as part of our project @DiasporicBooks, we are co-organizing...
On the back of one of those pasted-down sheets you wish had never seen paste, in a 1703 Compleat English Scholar (part of a diasporic library in #PalmadeMallorca). what might be a #dog.
Edmond Costello and Dowell
On another leaf in the same book, he signed his name in English using the Spanish/Catalan naming custom: two surnames joined by a conjunction!

Ex libris Edmondi Costello
I am fascinated by #diasporas and #onomastics. Here is Edmond Costello, an Irishman living in Palma de Mallorca in the 18th century, signing his name in Latin. No surprise here, but.....

Ramsay's Gentle Shepherd, in a 1763 Edinburgh edition, from the library of the Menorcan clergyman Miquel Rosselló, with no glossary! The sammelband's ex libris is dated 1802. Perhaps Rosselló has visited Scotland!

Miguel or Miquel Rosselló y Flores, showing proper respect for future researchers by dating his acquisition of a sammelband--six plays in English in Dublin, Belfast, and Edinburgh editions--in 1802. The book is in Palma but I suspect his library was in Ciutadella.
