Israel is currently bombing Palestinians sheltering in tents in the Gaza kill box, @albomp.bsky.social @senatorwong.bsky.social.

Why are you still pretending there's a ceasefire?

Why are you not condemning Israel's genocide?

Why are you not meeting your obligations under international law?

WHY!

Are Carbon Offsets Fixable? This article provides a systematic review of the literature on carbon offsets. A growing number of studies have found that the most widely used offset programs continue to greatly overestimate their p...

You can't fix offsets, because they're not really broken

They are designed from the ground up as a way for polluters to falsify climate action, and for disgustingly rich bankers to divert funds away from frontline communities

As long as fossil fuels exist, offsets will exist

Pollutting now and cleaning up later is not a viable strategy: Direct Air Capture (DAC) is hitting a hard reality check.

Costs are falling much slower than anticipated, casting doubts on the nascent technique’s role in tackling climate change.

Bowen says political environment may prevent 2035 emissions target becoming law The climate change minister says he will have to assess whether legislating the government's 2035 emissions target is politically feasible, with the major waypoint towards net zero due to be announced...

In 2022, with a two seat majority, the Albanese government legislated our first climate targets.

In 2025, with a supermajority, it’s claiming it lacks political support to update those targets.

It’s time for transparency about climate risk and our climate targets.

If Germany hadn't decided to shutdown nuclear power
- they wouldn't have worked so hard getting solar down the cost curve
- people in all countries wouldn't be benefiting from cheap solar

- Germany would have remained nuclear+fossil
[ Germany now burns less coal than at any time they had nuclear ]

I genuinely believe that we as a society have made a big mistake by not *constantly* calling Donald Trump stupid. That actual fucking word. None of this pussyfooting with strongly implying - we need to use ths word stupid because Donald Trump is the stupidest motherfucker on the planet.

MORNING AUSTRALIA

I found a fun and frightful little chart buried in the government's own data, revealing that even they expect domestic gas consumption to never return to its glory days

THE GAS SHORTAGE IS A BIG LIE USED TO JUSTIFY EASING APPROVALS = SUBSIDIES FOR HUGE NEW FF PROJECTS

Faark ... that's nearly AUD$25,000/kW of installed capacity.

No, really, faark.

And you haven't paid to run it yet, insured the site disaster risk (that is commercially impossible), even bought the fuel, or sorted the waste disposal (how?), or npv'd the eventual decommissioning cost.

Faark.

Thanks. We are visiting Lucca in May next year, so visiting Florence is definitely possible.😀
Any other suggestions for interesting technology sites to visit in Tuscany?

Yes. *Resilience* is just as important as reliability.
When some things do go wrong (as they eventually will), it's essential to have the equipment, procedures and settings all working together to prevent the problem propagating - and maintain services for all/most customers.

Climate fatalism is just as wrong as climate denial — it's never 'too late' for change Veteran environmentalist David Suzuki believes the time has passed us to stop climate change. He's wrong.

Well-said, @ketanjoshi.co.

Fatalism supports apathy and leads to deeper failure. I’ll pass, David.

I liked this comment.

"actions and decisions made now can make that change greater or lesser"
"[The debate] is about PR, social psychology, economics, social movements, politics, and campaign strategies."

That's great.
I'm just reporting the impression I got from my GP:
"Here's a new patient for you with [recently diagnosed ADHD]. From now on, it's _your_ responsibility to manage them".

My wonderful local bulk-billing GP expressed concern over patients being passed over to them from [ADHD] specialists - proper ongoing management+care requires more than just script writing.
Up the Medicare rebates at least!

Would it have been possible to identify and chop bits off to create a smaller isolated subset Spanish grid where generation = demand and frequently+voltage were stable? Or too hard??

What we saw was (simplistically) some things detected a problem, disconnecting themselves -> making the problem worse, and causing *more* things to disconnect!

I'd like to ask the question a different way.
Given the first N failures on the Spanish grid, how could it have been brought back under control?
What bits should/shouldn't have disconnected (and how/why), which things could/should have ridden-through?
