I'm going to sound like a grumpy old man, but what is the point of having a really loud vehicle?
There are folks who drag race down our block, and others who let their exhaust system rip at two in the morning.
What's the actual pleasure gained from having a noisy car?

How Woody Guthrie laid the foundation for punk rock, and that lots of punk is American folk with distortion and an amp.
Normal people: the courts are very serious interpreters of the law
The courts: go ahead, impersonate the feds

NEW: I've been shocked by some of the numbers I've been seeing on behind-the-meter power plants for data centers, so I did a little math.
less than a dozen gas plants being built to power data centers for big tech companies could emit a maximum of nearly 130 million tons of CO2e each year (!)
We just updated our Trump Admin financial disclosures database with 27 new appointees/nominees including Kevin Warsh, Markwayne Mullin and Steven Witkoff.
We also added a feature to sort names in our database by most recently added. 👉 projects.propublica.org/trump-team-f...
Much less discussed, but JPII also asked the US bishops to take action on racism. And ain't nothing to show for that. (And to be fair to the bishops, Pedro Arrupe, head of the Jesuits, instructed the US Jesuits to address racism and we didn't either)
We can only hope to get a sound bite of someone saying, "Oh, so you think you're a better general than Washington?"
You know who else famously used paid informants to infiltrate extremist groups?
The Justice Department.
It's amazing to spot the gaps between their theoretical values & when asked for concrete arguments. Two weeks ago the question really was "Are rights conditional or absolute?" This week was "What is a service the government should provide?"
If I teach this class again, I might require journals.
Students 2 weeks ago: "Rights are conditional & based on societal norms, therefore they're not absolute. I shouldn't impose on others."
This week: "The government should provide healthcare because it's a base human right necessary to survival."
I wish they spotted their own contradictions...
Famously, science is uninterested in the scientific method.
Did you hear about the fight that Thomas Aquinas started?
He walked up to some Duns and said, "You want Summa this!?"

I lost my voice spending a half hour doing Mickey and Goofy imitations for my friends' daughter while they were prepping dinner & feeding their baby.
My other friend asked me to rock her newborn to sleep at a restaurant b/c I'm better at it.
As a Jesuit, I do not now have nor will ever have kids.
NEW: The Union Bug is back! On this week's episode, I spoke with @dgorganize.bsky.social about his forthcoming book, "Unions of Our Own: 8 Building Blocks to Change Work...and the World."
It's a damn good conversation and I hope you'll check it out. Daniel's book is out April 28th.

I think with landscape, I'll do a shelf where the curve levels out again, and a second across the middle.
I'm also trying to figure out if I should risk trying to get the internal reinforcement out or sacrifice the bit of lost space.

Carcass of a baby grand piano laying on its side with the workshop in the background
Carcass of a baby grand piano standing against a workbench
I'm turning this baby grand piano into a bookcase. I'm fairly convinced of doing it in landscape (curve to the side), but is there any reason you see for building it in portrait (curve at the top)?
Also, please remember that this piano was totally kaput and I wouldn't normally rip up an instrument.
Oooh gotcha! My apologies for misunderstanding. Yeah, that's in part why I said the IDF specifically--naming the military force and trying to avoid sweeping generalizations (while also recognizing settler violence, but that's not who is in this video).
I think my original post answers that?
Destruction of people's religious items is a grave matter. Any time the US blows up a mosque, any time I see a church or synagogue is destroyed, I say the same prayer: May the people find comfort in their sorrow and commitment to rebuilding community.
As a Catholic, this of course upsets me.
But far and away more upsetting is all the kids the IDF has killed.

They went to Jared
I once did an activity with students (all male classroom) in which they calculated how many sexual terms in their vocabulary were violent and how many were male-dominant. (80%+)
And then had a conversation about why they used those words rather than biologically or medically accurate vocab.
