For U.S. medical researchers, shrinking labs and bare budgets are the new reality The Trump administration has slashed the number of grants from the National Institutes of Health, with far fewer focused on women, cancer and mental health.

American science is shrinking.

A Post analysis found that, halfway through this fiscal year, the number of competitive grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health is down by more than half compared with the same period last year. https://wapo.st/3OgoHKV

For non-scientists, LTER programs run for decades, so scientists can learn how ecosystems change over time. These programs cover ecology, evolution, systems biology, and it includes animals, plants, even microbes, and more. We learned so much about how our world works with LTERs. This sucks :(

The Best Flu Drug Americans Aren’t Taking This flu season has been rough. Antivirals can help.

This excellent @theatlantic.com article by @sarahzhang.bsky.social provides additional information. 4/4 www.theatlantic.com/health/2026/...

For prophylaxis, you may want to ask for a prescription if you've had close contact with someone who gets flu, including family members. 3/4

I learned about Xofluza from my colleague @mehlelab.bsky.social. In practice it is hard to get. Our kids' pediatrician has a streamlined protocol for Tamiflu (thanks @uwhealth.bsky.social!) but we had to be persistent to get Xofluza. And since it is rarely prescribed, few pharmacies stock it. 2/4

This flu season I've learned...

1. Home tests are readily available, including combined flu/covid tests.

2. Antivirals need to be taken within 48 h.

3. Xofluza is better than Tamiflu (one dose; more effective against flu B) but few know about it.

4. Antivirals can be taken as prophylaxis.
