Someone asked on HN for a comparison between @atproto.com and @matrix.org and I had a stab at it: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35886140 Corrections/clarifications welcome; it feels like this should be a blogpost or something rather than lost in the depths of HN...

The visceral emotional need to see power exercised by virtue of its existence alone, is always arresting to see. Worship of a mandate from heaven in a world that abandoned God.

Consolidation is natural because the scale of the network is huge part of the value. Still there’s room for multiple players by sheer inertia, kind of like how people use both Instagram and Pinterest to share photos

Can’t tell from the photo but many people (40+) out here swimming at 7am on a Friday. Whole world of go getters I wasn’t even aware of

I see, wasn’t sure if “service level” meant something other than that.

Where’s the web client hosted?

Separate but related: have you given any thought to the legal implications of server hosting? I.e. if I decide to host a server for me and my friends, am I liable for DMCA takedowns?

What are “service-level admin decisions”? You gloss over that but it sounds important.

Better algorithm control, I.e. if the algorithm starts showing me too much of some account, the ability to tell it to “tone it down a notch” without muting/blocking/etc

Why Signal and not Matrix?

Signal on the other hand is run by a guy who assets “nobody wants to run their own servers, and never will” and therefore thinks your entire project is doomed

Matrix because it is an actually open protocol (like ATP) and aligns with the values of this project:

Blue Sky: Can Twitter be owned by its users? Twitter competitor Blue Sky is growing fast and it aims to "decentralize Twitter". We explore what that means and how it works.

Potentially partially by running a “Big-World Server” and selling the data feed
