With Donald Trump’s return to power, a neo-Nazi group buoyed by his rhetoric is expanding its reach and changing the face of white extremism in America. Its leaders: a Texas couple, both born to Ku Klux Klan leaders

My latest piece is up on @contrariannews.org talking about the ways we need to support kids as they begin their online life contrarian.substack.com/p/your-kids-...
Really important story - army officials asked soldiers to identify themselves if they don't agree with Trump's politics that way he'd get only supportive soldiers in uniform during his political rally on base. Heavier soldiers were also barred from participating.
Want to take a break from the feuding? My team at @perilresearch.bsky.social just launched the DUCC curriculum: a tool to teach digital literacy for K-5 kids - critical skills for kids whose lives are increasingly online to help them identify and avoid harmful online content www.danieltheducc.org
This was a draft for review, the actual standards do not include this (it’s on their website, I checked)

WIRED tested the popular AI video generator from OpenAI and found that it amplifies sexist stereotypes and ableist tropes, perpetuating the same biases already present in AI image tools.
Incredibly important information here for all researchers!
Trump is a useful character to the movement, as he openly allows their influence. Had they been more influential, would it have stopped Trump due to an improved moral foundation? Who knows. But it’s a useful framing to draw in folks who might not otherwise have supported traditional Christian values
It’s an interesting argument, but it doesn’t really hold water. The movement has been cultivating power and influence since the civil rights era (much of this work began as a reaction to integration), and we often forget that movements that have clear goals are opportunistic.
This framing is really useful in understanding a new argument. Many in Christian nationalist circles called Trump an “imperfect vessel” for their message, but I’ve never seen anyone make the argument that the emergence of Trump is due to lack of Christian dominance.
I’ve seen this NYT article being shared with various snippets being singled out as being a good synopsis of Christians’ perceived persecution. But I think this quote is more significant: (1/n)

Judge Timothy Kelly a Trump appointee, said Enrique Tarrio, who Trump just freed with a full pardon, is a terrorist.

A lot has already been said about this by very smart people. Let me just add that whatever you might say it is (“my heart goes out to you” according to Musk, or the Nazi salute), it’s a signal. Public gestures make public statements.
Agreed! I was in Iraq doing humanitarian assistance during the war, and told a friend of mine who did similar work that this movie “felt” more like real war than any other I’ve seen. Because it’s always messy, you don’t know who is on what side, and you are always in a state of over-saturation.
Adding this to my ever-growing, never-diminishing to read list. Send help.
This article overlooks that much of tradwife content, esp on TikTok, is targeted towards the male gaze.
And young men are adopting more conservative & traditionalist views compared to young women. We’re seeing a crisis of misogyny, not just a crisis of masculinity.

New Gender Update out in @ejpgjournal.bsky.social. With data from the new wave of the EES, I show a strong increase in support for the far right among young voters. Especially the share of young men who consider voting for the far right has exploded.

Glad I’m not alone in this!
So cool! Thanks for sharing this recipe for a multi-hour rabbit hole to go down and procrastinate writing my dissertation!
Wow, hi everyone! Thanks for the follows! A little about me: I work with great folks @perilresearch.bsky.social & am finishing a PhD on the ways that extremist beliefs impact political violence. I’m also a 15+ year grizzled int’l aid worker, a plant enthusiast, and ok-ish at this whole BlueSky thing
ICCT just published 3 papers on gender and violent extremism today. Research on gender and radicalisation (2014–2024) has grown, focusing mainly on women in Islamist extremism, leaving gaps in literature and practice. The report highlights trends and underexplored areas.
