How to cover online manipulation of students — without exacerbating the problem Online extremism and radicalization are affecting students, educators, and families. We need prevention-focused media coverage that doesn’t sensationalize outlier scenarios.

My latest on @alexanderrusso.bsky.social The Grade is about discussing, and journalists covering, stories of online manipulation of kids & the importance of covering red flags & ways that kids can be better protected from predatory content @perilresearch.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/alexande...

Bragg Soldiers Who Cheered Trump's Political Attacks While in Uniform Were Checked for Allegiance, Appearance As Trump viciously attacked his perceived political foes, he whipped up boos from the gathered troops directed at California leaders, including Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Really important story - army officials asked soldiers to identify themselves if they don't agree with Trump's politics that way he'd get only supportive soldiers in uniform during his political rally on base. Heavier soldiers were also barred from participating.

Trump is a useful character to the movement, as he openly allows their influence. Had they been more influential, would it have stopped Trump due to an improved moral foundation? Who knows. But it’s a useful framing to draw in folks who might not otherwise have supported traditional Christian values

It’s an interesting argument, but it doesn’t really hold water. The movement has been cultivating power and influence since the civil rights era (much of this work began as a reaction to integration), and we often forget that movements that have clear goals are opportunistic.

This framing is really useful in understanding a new argument. Many in Christian nationalist circles called Trump an “imperfect vessel” for their message, but I’ve never seen anyone make the argument that the emergence of Trump is due to lack of Christian dominance.

I’ve seen this NYT article being shared with various snippets being singled out as being a good synopsis of Christians’ perceived persecution. But I think this quote is more significant: (1/n)

A lot has already been said about this by very smart people. Let me just add that whatever you might say it is (“my heart goes out to you” according to Musk, or the Nazi salute), it’s a signal. Public gestures make public statements.

Agreed! I was in Iraq doing humanitarian assistance during the war, and told a friend of mine who did similar work that this movie “felt” more like real war than any other I’ve seen. Because it’s always messy, you don’t know who is on what side, and you are always in a state of over-saturation.

"Tradwives" were the hot online topic in 2024 — but offline, women are more independent than ever Social media celebrating women's submission is propaganda, not a reflection of reality

This article overlooks that much of tradwife content, esp on TikTok, is targeted towards the male gaze.

And young men are adopting more conservative & traditionalist views compared to young women. We’re seeing a crisis of misogyny, not just a crisis of masculinity.

New Gender Update out in @ejpgjournal.bsky.social. With data from the new wave of the EES, I show a strong increase in support for the far right among young voters. Especially the share of young men who consider voting for the far right has exploded.

Radicalisation and Gender – What Do We Know? This report stems from the recognised need to explore the role of gender in radicalisation processes more deeply. The gaps identified in literature are supported by research and interviews with profes...

ICCT just published 3 papers on gender and violent extremism today. Research on gender and radicalisation (2014–2024) has grown, focusing mainly on women in Islamist extremism, leaving gaps in literature and practice. The report highlights trends and underexplored areas.
