Most countries aren't self sufficient for food. We all depend on oil to move food at the very least. The USA has its strategic reserve and maybe some other countries have similar, but I don't think that will be enough to rise this out.

As usual those who have already been struggling with the cost of living will be affected the worst. If you couldn't afford to live when energy was cheap, it's going to suck when we see how much it could end up costing.

The illegal invasion of Iran means oil is already expensive. The cost of food will go up. People will buy less.

Come harvest time, food might be left to rot in the field even with high prices, if fuel cannot be purchased or costs wouldn't be recouped.

Cheap oil allows us to grow huge crops and transport them around the world, trading (inedible) oil calories for delicious edible calories.

When the price of oil goes up, the price of food goes up way higher. Crops become more expensive to grow, fertilize, spray, harvest, transport, refrigerate.

This is why most of us only have to look back a few generations to find ancestors who could only eat meat a few times a week.

These days we grow so much meat/eggs/dairy/fish so cheaply that we can afford to let meat dishes go bad in the refrigerator.
