There's a huge amount of inspiration to be found around us, especially once you start looking outside of the normal places.
Doing fantasy? Don't just look at Sanderson and Tolkien. Go watch some fucking mecha anime, go read horror novels, think outta the box.

I find inspiration most rich for originality when outside of its normal expected boundaries. That's how innovation gets pushed!
Perfectly valid, but I think there are ways of finding a perspective on the 'why' or the make the character so interesting that the drive and ambition for power isn't terribly make or break.
It's because the alleged halfling is a fraud, and is truly a dwarf in disguise.

I do sincerely wish it was easier to brand worldbuilding discussions beyond, "Hey this isn't just for fantasy, but everyone... literally this is so cool to do in any setting..."
This is a big thing I actually recommend basically no matter the TTRPG setting / theme.
There's always someone looking to offer you a deal that's too good to be true. Sometimes there's a caveat to it.
Othertimes, the power itself *is* the caveat, and will change you completely through its usage.
