It bothers me. To some extent, I even see little pieces here or there in Color Splash. And I don't necessarily mind these games trying to be funny or goofy, but the old games manage to pull that off while also genuinely being taken seriously, and that's the thing that separates from the newer games.

I want another game that truly feels like it has a chance to be remembered as something special, something that some newcomers and long-time fans can maybe even end up liking more than what came before.
I WANT it to be topped. I could never throw away all the feelings I have for TTYD, but I genuinely believe that if they really try and don't hold themselves back, they can make new games that feel as engaging and fun in both gameplay and story as the first three games.
Overly hopeful thoughts but if the Paper Mario series has a better, more consistently good direction following The Thousand-Year Door's remake, I hope I.S. and Nintendo don't just accept that the fanbase will always prefer TTYD and never try to top it.
