That is exactly what the American right wing believes. And it’s going to take us Americans to stop them.

I don't think most folks have deeply considered the degree to which the car industry has burrowed into the brains of the typical American.

Humans, whose bodies literally evolved to easily walk (or run) 10 - 20 - 30 miles a day, now can't fathom walking 4 to 5 miles. Over ~ 16 waking hours.

Katie Wilson is doing an excellent job at being @mayorofseattle.bsky.social

Today I am LIVING for the council going bigger with the library levy and absolutely stomping Rivera down on her conservative, out-of-touch-with-voters, obstructionist politics.

Hey Dems, if you want to reach young men, maybe tell them that, if they allow Republicans to keep Congress, there's a non-zero chance they will die losing a war that Trump started for no reason.

Everybody knows now that is a very real possibility, and you need show them where you stand on it.

Spot on.

Yes. While I think the policy choice can be defended on the merits, it’s not a wise political move. Would have been better to take on SPOG over the CARE team right out of the gate.

blue maga acts like the only time you introduce a political idea is when you immediately have 60 votes for it and otherwise you just bide your time. you think when the civil rights act came up the votes were there on day 1? social security? jesus, the stupidity burns.

I agree. The issue to me isn't whether we use surveillance cameras but whether SPD has proper oversight and controls. I'd rather we focus on that issue, and I think the focus on cameras is a distraction from that.

There were a lot of people like me trying to tell anyone who would listen that Trump was a dangerous world-historic lunatic and spending our weekends trying to keep him out of office, and then there were a whole bunch of streamers and podcast bros selling you on the opposite. Why cater to them?

I don't think it's a base impulse. We've used cameras for all sorts of things for many years, including to catch speeders near schools. I think the issue here isn't the camera but SPD and whether we think there's effective oversight.

I agree about the politics. But on policy I think this is fine.

This is an unbelievably good shot-by-shot remake of an actual ~1984-5 Soviet television signoff.

Agreed. A Rubicon was crossed today and unless we remove Trump and MAGA from power for good we are all going to regret it.

*assuming the ST board doesn’t put ST3 in a blender

Indeed. While I’m very glad more death was avoided tonight…Trump is going to think it worked, and we are likely to see him try this again. Each time he tries, he gets closer to actually doing it. He has to be removed from power by Congress.

And of course the thunderdome that is the WA state Supreme Court fight with 5 of 9 seats on the ballot, covered here by @gramsofgnats.bsky.social

50+ people on a sunny Saturday to save ST3. We can’t let ST out cities against each other. They need to finish ALL of ST3.

What you’re saying makes a ton of sense here, that the real use case and evaluation criteria should be whether it leads to more convictions.

I’m sympathetic to the critics of the cameras but also believe Mayor Wilson is handling this well and makes a good case for their use. I just wish we’d focus on what I think is the real issue here, which is whether we have effective oversight of SPD.

1 day ago 9 0 2 0

I also think this is true. The question is whether we trust SPD with this tool. For these cameras to be acceptable in Seattle we need to know that Mayor Wilson is whether she is providing effective oversight over SPD and their use of the cameras. I believe she is, but to me that is the crux of it.
