On Thursday we (JavaBin Oslo) organized the meetup “Testing Spring Boot Applications Demystified” with Philip Riecks. Philip also did the talks for our JavaBin-branch in Bergen including visiting our branch in Sogndal. Thank you so much for visiting our communities Philip 🙏🏼👏🏼

I joined as a jugde on the Sphero Global Challenge regional final in Oslo. Inspiring children to learn coding & collaborative problem solving will inspire them to apply for STEM-eductions. Thanks to the YoungCoderz coding club for their work to teach children coding (Java being one of the languages)
In an addition to giving a talk myself, earlier this week I also organized a meetup in collaboration with the Oslo Software Architecture group (OSWA), the AWS User Group in Oslo and Ardoq. Our speaker, Erlend Ekeren, did an amazing job telling us how to build lightweight internal dev platforms.
Yesterday I gave a talk about all the modern features of Java for students at Kristiania University in a joint meetup with JavaBin and BIOS-student group at Kristiania. This marks the third time I have given this talk, meaning that even more students hear about the better Java.
I'll be giving several talks in the weeks ahead, about how modern Java helps writing more expressive code with higher code quality, through a combination of "back to basics" ideas & FP-inspired data structures. To help my own community, I'll be focusing on Norwegian conferences, meetups and events.
Dervis gives a talk in front of an audience.
A couple of weeks ago, I gave a talk about higher code quality using modern Java for the students at Oslo Metropolitan University. A lot of questions before and after the talk made the evening even better! Thanks for having me OsloMet 🙏🏼
Yesterday we had the honor of hosting @venkats.bsky.social with his highly relevant talk about design tradeoffs. Being able to fill a room of ppl in a Monday evening in Oslo is unusual! I’m grateful for Venkat’s energy and passion from the stage. 🙏🏼🙏🏼 Here some photos from the event. #javabin #oswa
If you're in the Oslo area, I hope to see you tomorrow (Monday January 26th) at the
Oslo Software Architecture (OSWA) group

In addition: I volunteered on projects specifically focusing on helping underrepresented & multicultural women closer to Java & JavaScript jobs. For me, championing means building community through volunteering to helping others. I met with so many great devs this year, feels deeply meaningful.
My 2025 review:
🎄 18 JavaBin & Oslo Software Architecture meetups
🎄 9 conference & meetup talks
🎄 70 hours of free mentoring to underrep. developers
🎄 60 hours as voluntary JUG steering committee member
🎄 400 more JUG members, totaling 3550
🎄 67k people reached on LinkedIn, with 330k impressions
A few weeks ago, I gave a keynote talk at the DataSmart 2025 conference in Trondheim. I discussed a multi-agentic system I built with #Java and open-source tools (no frameworks), emphasizing the importance of ethics. It was one of my first tech keynotes ever, and I’m grateful for the support.
One of the original founders of JavaBin, 30 years ago! 🙏🏼
More photos! Our Christmas meetup was great! For me, being a #Java Champion, is all about community. It’s about the people, our speakers and members. Also important is honoring heroes such as Steinar Kjærnsrød, on the picture with me, who was one of the original founders of JavaBin 30 years ago 🙏🏼🏆🎄
Our JavaBin Christmas meetup about #AI and #Java was a huge success, with a record turnout on our event🎄🏆 Our speakers, local heroes from our community, did amazing 👏🏼 We also served free Christmas dinner for all the attendees in true JavaBin tradition and quality. Super proud of my JUG and our team.
@johnfjellstad.bsky.social Jeg kan se at du har sendt inn en lyntale.
Jeg skal sjekke og si fra 👍🏼
And I especially welcome my female peers in tech to send in proposals.
We'd like to see more proposals for #JavaZone. An updated list of categories you can consider:
- Core Java/JVM
- All coding languages
- Security
- Backend / frontend
- Architecture
- Frameworks, techniques, processes
- Project experiences
- Leadership, mentoring & DEI
Hope to see more suggestions!
I’m happy it wasn’t another “how to prompt” talk. You gave us important clues for using & guiding the models, & knowing how they work in the editor. More importantly, to remember to think ourselves when designing code.
A seriously good talk by @venkats.bsky.social today 🏆 It’s not another hype talk; you really learn how to use of AI with techniques in TDD in a way that give you control & understanding of the code. Two incredible hours of live coding, discussions & inspiration. Congrats Venkat, and thank you 🙏🏼
The model has a “stopping problem”, we need to guide it in the correct direction instead of keep generating method after method.
We just saw how the model is learning even how we format our code 🤯 We have also seen how the models keep throwing bad code at us. Venkat’s advice: Use AI for ideas, not solutions.
We, the Norwegian JUG, are hosting the “Test Driving Code with the Help of AI” talk with @venkats.bsky.social. The room is packed & Venkat is talking about how to model, build and test the Game of Life problem with AI & TDD. Venkat’s ability to convey knowledge is without comparison. Thanks Venkat 🙏🏼
Here is a few categories you can consider when sending talks to JavaZone:
- Core Java/JVM
- Frameworks and languages
- Techniques & processes (technical)
- Experience talks (such as projects)
- Leadership and mentoring
- Diversity, inclusion and equity

We, the Norwegian JUG, would love to see more proposals for #JavaZone. Send your suggestions from our website:

I advise especially my female peers to send proposals.
I’m so sorry hear this. I’m praying for your father and his safety, and your family. Take care of each other and also yourself in this difficult time. I know how much is your family means to you, and I sincerely hope he will be better soon.
The Norwegian JUG will organize a meetup with @venkats.bsky.social on 12. march! We'll speak about AI & TDD which is more important & relevant than ever. Thank you, Venkat, for sharing with our user group!

Hope to see you there!
That’s one of Jim’s super powers 🏆 He did the same at JavaZone with me and Marek (JZ program lead).
