1954 Solar Cell
Bell Labs invented the first practical solar cell that converts sunlight into usable amounts of electricity. The early prototypes achieved 6% efficiency and were installed on telephone poles, at central offices and later the technology was used to power satellites.
The technology was an outgrowth of transistor
research where Bell Labs was refining silicon. Shown here is one of the first solar cell prototypes that was used for demonstration purposes in 1954.
