“With many newspapers closed, and no clear path for local public libraries to preserve digital-only reporting, the work of safeguarding journalism’s record increasingly falls to the Internet Archive,” reads a letter of support signed by over 100 working journalists.

Book bans and conservative policies targeting LGBTQ students have gotten less attention this year, but these are at issue in pivotal school board elections next month in Alaska, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.
Our guide breaks it all down.
Putting the current leader’s name and image on everything is an authoritarian move, designed to make them seem more present, more powerful, more invincible than they are. It is a betrayal of American democracy, where power belongs to the people.

Haha, it's great that we're all waiting to see if the sitting President of the United States destroys the global economy tomorrow for no reason, right? This is fun. Love the suspense of all our lives hanging in the balance on the whims of an unstable, raging narcissist.
"Several hundred people are sitting on Capitol Hill, refusing to stop it. Calling it an “AI problem” gives those decisions, and those people, a place to hide."
This interview with the great @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social was a "wow" moment for me. Thanks, New York Times and David Marchese.

I couldn't help noticing the question that seemed the most Times-like to me.
The glibness. The indifference. The carelessness. The utter lack of planning for a war against a country of 90M. The sickness of a man who acts on whim that will kill thousands not hundreds. The horror of a regime that enables this sickness. The broken body politic that votes in such malignancy.
Relaxing in the ace-ness of it all.
Yesterday morning kids were sent running from their bus stop in panic because ICE showed up. This guy at today’s ICE Out of Lindenwold protest is a must watch 😭. @maddow.bsky.social
Just ordered a book from my local Waterstones. Click and collect so I’ll get it on way home tonight. As cheap as Amazon. Also bought an instant camera earlier this week from Argos, cheaper than on Amazon. It’s proving very easy not to use the evil billionaire’s website. More of you should try it.
KNOXVILLE STUDENTS: “To see this many people come out, it means so much. Because living in the South it can feel isolating to have these different viewpoints.”
Huge student-led anti-ICE walkout happened today, despite threats of discipline from school officials💪🏽

IF Americans take back their country (BIG if), it'll take SO MUCH WORK, & SO much money to undo the *foretold* damage that criminal traitor Donald Trump is inflicting on American institutions that took CENTURIES to build.
What a self-inflicted tragedy.
Because "Trump will lower my egg prices"..
Donald Trump continues to consolidate power and show a flagrant disregard for the rule of law. This arrest is another affront to our rights and freedoms and should alarm and enrage us.
Wikimedia has entered into an agreement to _limit the damage AI companies are doing to them_. Libby is actively producing AI content. These are radically different things, so it makes sense that they would receive different reactions.
More of this messaging please. AOC shouldn't be the only one.
"Post-truth is pre-fascism, and Trump has been our post-truth president. When we give up on truth, we concede power to those with the wealth and charisma to create spectacle in its place."
I published this piece on January 9th, 2021. It remains all too relevant.

Not one word of condemnation by our government of Trump's illegal act of war in Venezuela.
Not one word.
As much as this pains me as an American, the US is a rogue nation ruled by a despot unbound by national or international law. The free world must quickly form a new alliance perhaps across new borders to protect itself. Our engineered Supreme Court and supine Congress lack the courage to help you.
Notable to me that fed-up leaders of Greenland and Denmark are not only telling Trump to stop his threats, but also suggesting that their NATO/EU compadres should speak up against the bluster as well. I’ve seen messages of support from Finland, Norway & Sweden today.
📌It must be clearly articulated that we will not survive three more years of this frenetic, bloody pace. Trump’s “presidency” has been chaotic, brutal and has accomplished nothing but weakening our standing in the world, and making our day-to-day lives far more challenging, expensive, and stressful.
So many in media are ill-equipped to interview officials about what’s happening because they begin with the presumption of legitimacy and don’t know enough about history or U.S. foreign policy to foment intelligent pushback and hold officials accountable.
No, it’s much worse than that—since 1985 he’s openly said we should work with Russia to divide the world between us “for peace” and bomb or starve all other countries into submission by cutting aid, including punishing our NATO allies—sound familiar?

I worked for DOJ. I don't think people realize how dangerous it is for the White House to takeover the daily operations of the Justice Department.
