The BBNJ Agreement provides a framework for the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (#MPAs) in the #HighSeas. Prior to this Agreement, there was no comprehensive international mechanism to create protected areas in international waters, which make up two thirds of the Ocean.

And we celebrate the late Kristina Gjerde, who was to be with us at the first WOW, her legacy in protecting our ocean has definitely left a lasting mark on global ocean governance and continues to inspire those working to safeguard the high seas.
