Because language sample analysis is often recommended as a less biased assessment method, Ortiz et al. write that a better understanding of its diagnostic accuracy is needed to ensure appropriate decision making in clinical applications.

By eliminating the need for specialized tongue and lip motion tracking equipment, this line of research might someday make speech kinematic tools available in everyday clinical settings and improve clinical assessment and treatment for children with speech sound disorders.
This project completes foundational work for a speech inversion neural network for children. Speech inversion would allow clinicians to can “see” how a child moves their lips and tongue, obtaining this information from audio recordings alone.
I took about 6 months off from social media, but I’m back with some news!
I’m honored to receive a 2025 New Investigators Research Grant from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation.

Hi!
I am excited to enter this space as a researcher and speech-language pathologist. I enjoy learning and experimenting about the interactions between speech production, linguistics, and technology. Especially considering cultural and linguistically diverse populations.
NIH indirects case update:
Hearing ongoing now, and I'll try to live tweet some notable exchanges.
Prior to more detailed arguments, Judge Kelley starts off with a few point questions to both sides:

Hi Susan, congratulations on your retirement from all of us at the Syracuse University Speech Production Lab. 💐 We hope that you enjoy your new work/life balance and look forward to future updates through your blog.
This aligns with my understanding but I’ll follow this convo to learn more
First first-authored paper for Syracuse Speech Production Lab PhD student Benny Herbst 🤩
Proud of her for all her hard work with this study!

A flyer for a study recruiting autistic teenagers at the University of Houston. Participants must be between 9-17, fluent in English and have an official autism diagnosis. There is a QR code for people interested in participating in the study.
We are recruiting! If you know any autistic teenagers in the Houston area who may be interested or if you have connections to groups or people who would be willing to spread the word, please let us know!
I'm excited to share our new study on cross-modal iconicity from our special issue in JASA! We show [r] is rough and [l] is smooth even in languages that conflate them within one phoneme. The effect is even stronger than the bouba/kiki effect!
We strongly suggest that academic publishers and other platforms that host research rapidly implement a Share to Bluesky button for their articles. Here's how:

Noticing that SPEECH SOUND DISORDERS enthusiasts tend to put #ssd in their bios. ℹ️ #ssd largely a k-pop tag, short for
#StaySelcaDay. The tag #cssd (CHILDREN'S speech sound disorders) is relatively uncluttered. If we use it, it would soon be obvious that it's a 🦋 #bskySPEECHIES SLP/SLT tag/feed.

It’s me! Is there much happening here regarding SLP research chat?
