New: 150 unionized ProPublica workers are on strike TODAY over AI, layoff protections, wages, and more.
They're asking readers to not visit ProPublica or engage with content on other platforms. It's the first work stoppage of its kind at the newsroom.

Cycladic buildings and church with a distant view of the sea and another island in the background
Santorini on my mind... I was probably on my way to taking a friend to watch the sunset when I caught this view on camera. It's my 2nd or 3rd attempt at capturing it in watercolor. Something about the light, colors, and strong geometry really capture my eye.

Loose watercolor painting of an open Chinese pavilion with red lanterns catching the sunlight. There is a staircase leading up to it
Another watercolor I just finished. The reference photo was from my trip to China in 2014 after my dad died. I needed to get away to come to terms with the immediate grief. I remember walking up this path and being mesmerized by the light going through the lanterns and the pavilion.

Ah yes, April 1st. The annual "oh I should stay off social media today" holiday
Loose watercolor of a bowl full of apples in varying shades
I really like how this still life of apples came out. The colors and the light just really speak to me.
I should jokingly call it How you like them apples to also honor my time in Boston 😆🍎🍏

Oh no. I'm sorry!
I think you're not as well protected by the laws if the plan is outside of the marketplace
I’m reading a book about happiness and a point about social media’s impact on happiness stood out to me:
People whose algorithms contain a lot of negative content are much more likely to post negative content AND think negative thoughts (and vice versa)
Since your algorithm is influenced by the

I don't want to be tempted to browse or do anything else either. For me, it's higher value to have a device that is solely for reading

No, I prefer just a plain black and white e-ink. I technically have the Paperwhite but I don't use the light because plain e-ink doesn't cause eye strain
There's something quite exciting happening with AVIF and progressive rendering.
Some recent patches let you provide custom 'frames' as progressive passes, so you can provide e.g. smaller blurry versions of the full image to use as a progressive pass.
I always get the kids Kindle package. It's reasonably priced, comes with a warranty and case, and has no ads. Just set it up in your account without the child safety stuff.
Looks nice!

I tend to support the idea that works are independent from their authors, but it’s an entirely different matter when the franchise is directly funding anti-trans activism
Ink and wash of a typical Santorini domed church with a square and people walking in the foreground
Happy accidents? I was doing a demo for my class and thought my pen was waterproof. It was not. The class gasped in horror.
It wasn't planned, but I ended up with this beautiful, impressionistic ink and wash of a church in Oia, Santorini.

p75 and p90 JavaScript bytes on the web have exploded since May, 2025—easily the largest 10 month period based on HTTP Archive data since 2023.
The long-tail is getting worse, very quickly.
Gemini, what happened in May 2025?

A bunch of multicolor circles barely touching each other and the colors leak between them
Painting kissing circles in watercolor is always so meditative. I was reminded of that while teaching my urban sketching class the basics of watercolor. Need to do this more often.

P.S. The original is also available though not as a listing. DM if interested.
I painted this atmospheric carnation from my imagination in 2021 during the pandemic. It was a little escape from the isolation.
I just set it up in my shop on request. You can now collect it unframed or matted and framed. Free US shipping. #watercolor #art

Safari started supporting the Interaction to Next Paint metric in December. It tends to report much higher delays than Chrome!
This is mostly due to bugs in Safari that cause it to overstate the presentation delay component of INP.

Advocate: J.K. Rowling uses Harry Potter wealth to fund anti-transgender organization.
You absolutely cannot separate the artist and the art without contributing to the persecution of trans people. Boycott everything Potter.
Loose watercolor of three onions (white, yellow, red) on a table casting shadows
I really like how this onion still life came together. It's from the first week of JJ Jiang's watercolor course. Finally finished it on Sunday. I'm definitely going to have to take some of my own onion reference photos and repeat the exercise. 🧅

Started a 28-day challenge partially based on Samantha Dion Baker's February drawing challenge. I loved the idea and mixed in her prompts with my own. I'm going to call it my 2026 self portrait.
1st two days painted from life:
1. My hand
2. My favorite shoes
