I often tell others that I found a family. When Alan and David asked me to volunteer for Eastercon, I didn’t even need to think! I also volunteered for Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014 and have signed up for this year's games as I love highlighting Glasgow and Scotland!!

I regained a significant portion of my hearing, which really boosted my confidence and enabled me to get back into the wonderful fandom world that’s out there. The Worldcon experience opened doors to an amazing group of people from volunteers, to new friends and the wonderful fandom out there!

Why scary? Well I need to share a little bit about myself: I became withdrawn after losing my hearing in my late twenties. I relied on lip reading, but, in 2019, I was offered a cochlear implant that changed everything.

I clicked on the volunteer page and, wouldn’t you know it, I saw a role as area head under logistics for shipping and storage. Since logistics has always been a big part of my career, I applied and was incredibly fortunate to get it! This opened a door that was scary but blew me away.

My volunteering adventure began when I was on a quest to find new authors and books to add to my ever-growing TBR list, I stumbled upon a Worldcon in Glasgow 2024 ad. I went to the site for more information, having only been to Bristol Con twice before.

This fantasy steampunk novel finds us in an alternate Cairo, where humans and supernatural beings live alongside each other. Senior Agent Hamed al-Nasr and his partner Agent Onsi are investigating a possessed tram car, but discover it will take more than a simple exorcism to solve this mystery (2/3)

This month’s Weegie phrase is ‘Gie it laldy’, meaning to do something with lots of gusto and enthusiasm, aka how we’re all preparing for Iridescence and Unconfined. Sometimes it’s used as a term of encouragement, for example ‘You’re going on your first panel item? Gie it laldy!'

Everyone know that in the UK you’re just a stone’s throw from a new accent, so we thought we’d help everyone acclimatise to Glasgow’s with a collection of Weegie words. Since this is the first one you’re getting a bonus word, Weegie, short for Glaswegian

A Star Wars AT-ST Walker. It is a tall grey machine with a rectangular body on 2 thin legs, and the front and side have guns attached. It is stood on green netting and is up-lit with orange lights.

There are also temporary exhibits of transportation from different SF movies - in between the classic displays you can find the Doctor’s TARDIS being guarded by K-9, a Star Wars speeder bike amongst the motorbikes, Doc Brown’s DeLorean and Marty’s hover board, and be towered over by an AT-ST Walker!

A Star Wars speeder bike with a mannequin rider stood next to it. The bike is a brown pod-like rectangle with no wheels, and the mannequin is wearing white protective clothing with a black underlayer and white helmet, not dissimilar to a storm tropper. Behind is a wall of motorbikes.

The musuem has permanent exhibits of all different types of transportation from Glasgow, from horse drawn carriages to electric cars, and an immersive 1930’s version of Kelvin Street, with a cobled road, old shops, and a full-scale replica of the subway to explore.

There will be lots of great things to do at the convention, but there’s lots of fun Science Fiction things happening around Glasgow too!

So if you have never volunteered at a convention, or it’s been a while since you have, I’d like to say to you what someone said to me: “You look helpful. Take a seat!”

And I’ve been involved ever since, at every level from casual gopher to committee member. I’ve found there’s always something to be done, no matter how little or how much I have to give. And it is always something worth doing.

I didn’t know it yet, but I was becoming part of a community, making lifelong friends, and making myself something to do at conventions for decades now. The autumn after that, I helped plan our small local convention, along with some of those friends.

Later, I helped out in the con suite, refilling bowls of snacks and fetching boxes from storage. And instead of spending the con wandering aimlessly and avoiding people, I met new people. I talked to them. I went to parties. I enjoyed myself (despite blatantly ignoring the 5-2-1 rule).

As the staffer handed me my badge, she gestured to the empty chair beside her and said, “You look helpful. Take a seat!”

I took a seat. I handed out badges and learned people’s names and chatted with the older reg staff members during our quiet times.

So. It was spring 1994, and I was 17 years old, attending my first big sci-fi convention along with 30 or so other members of my university’s sci-fi society. The registration line was long, and the reg staff were hassled. Finally, I was at the table.
