But if you ask for a flat out estimate and then keep trying to push that down you are only saying "hey your art and work and time is not worth that much, what are you thinking?" and will just result loosing the connection.

Friendly reminder: saying 'hi this is my budget, can we work something out based on this?' is much nicer and may result getting something ,than asking for an estimate and then constantly trying to push that down.
