Fun fact: Franklin University is named after Dr. John Hope Franklin, one of the world’s greatest historians and a Fisk graduate.

And Franklin is fashioned after Fisk University, the historic institution of higher learning in Nashville, Tennessee.

The stories I write center Black queer lives and experiences grounded in history, culture, youth activism, and protest. Both RAINBOW and PROMISE KEEPER take place at the fictional Franklin University, an HBCU.

As U.S. Army veterans, I was floored by the lack of media attention their story received.

In my latest book, Promise Keeper, I created a fictional storyline inspired by experiences like theirs because I believe this is a story that needed to be told.

U.S. Army veteran Monique Coverson and her partner, Larissa Joseph’s imprisonment in Kuwait moved me deeply when I first learned about them.
