Art and book criticism is a dying genre. Without it, great art will suffer since it will be buried by flavorless frictionless products favored by algorithms. There needs to be more support and outlets for criticism obviously but PhD and MFA programs too could do more to teach and support criticism.

Critics should be the arbiters of taste. But @nyt book review prefers to follow the hype, i.e. its 100 notable book list that has Hunger Games as one of this year's best. Depressing that books sections pander to popularity rather than doing their job and finding books that fly under the radar.

Today's news in fascism: slavery wasn't bad and you are no longer allowed to criticize the white race for racism because that's racist. In fact don't even utter the word "white" if you're nonwhite because that's racist.

He’ll never get elected. Norms will restrain him. Mueller will get him. He can’t come back from J6. No way he’ll get re-elected. Epstein will bring him down. He’s overplayed his hand. He has dementia. This isn’t who we are. (Fables of the Trumpocene)

Dems. Wanna get your polling out of the gutter? Stop talking about redrawing house maps in blue states and do it. Go big. Don't match them seat for seat. Blow them out of the water. Then endorse Mamdani. You're welcome.

POLITICO compiled a list of all the Washington Post staffers who have left in the past eight months. It’s at least a hundred names, many of them among the biggest names in journalism. This is the fastest erosion of a major outlet ever.

What I like about Newsom is that he says exactly what I say about T rather than the watered down bullshit we usually hear from Dems. He has my support, for now.

There is one place, however, where Musk, with the help of his minions, achieved his goals. He did indeed shred U.S.A.I.D. Though a rump operation is now operating inside the State Department, the administration says that it has terminated more than 80 percent of U.S.A.I.D. grants. Brooke Nichols, an associate professor of global health at Boston University, has estimated that these cuts have already resulted in about 300,000 deaths, most of them of children, and will most likely lead to significantly more by the end of the year. That is what Musk’s foray into politics accomplished.

Musk should be asked about this in every interview he does now and forever. To ignore it is a dereliction of duty.

I'm genuinely sorry that Fetterman had a stroke and suffers from depression. But arguing that he has a free pass not to do his job in the name of destigmatizing brain injury and mental health struggles is offensive. If he can't do it, he should resign. If he doesn't want to, he should resign faster.

Cost-cutting tactics

The secret bonuses were just one of many maneuvers UnitedHealth devised to track and cut expenses in its nursing home initiative.

Internal emails show, for example, that UnitedHealth supervisors gave their teams “budgets” showing how many hospital admissions they had “left” to use up on nursing home patients.

The company also monitored nursing homes that had smaller numbers of patients with “do not resuscitate” – or DNR – and “do not intubate” orders in their files. Without such orders, patients are in line for certain life-saving treatments that might lead to costly hospital stays.

Two current and three former UnitedHealth nurse practitioners told the Guardian that UnitedHealth managers pressed nurse practitioners to persuade Medicare Advantage members to change their “code status” to DNR even when patients had clearly expressed a desire that all available treatments be used to keep them alive.

UnitedHealth secretly pressured nurses to change patients' records to include DNRs (Do Not Resuscitate) without their consent, so those patients would die instead of being saved with medical interventions that could cost UnitedHealth money.

This is murder.

House GOP is holding a hearing on their tax bill at 1:00 AM because they don't want us to know about their scheme to strip 13.7 million people of health coverage & they think no one will stay awake for it.

I’ll be there, testifying & offering amendments to protect our families.

Manufacturing "Black Fatigue" in the Art World Behind the declining demand for Black portraiture, and the backlash against Thomas J Price’s Times Square sculpture, lurks a strategic campaign of erasure.

A curator told me she told her black artists to get what was theirs now because the Black boom will be a a Black bust in five years. That's capitalism for you. hyperallergic.com/1012522/manu...

Democratic Party is on their way to driving away all the progressives along with the working class until all they have left is AIPAC, other lobbyists, and Hollywood to help them with the optics of candidates who are incapable of putting two words together without first checking in with the polls.
