Here's a six-month time-lapse of me building the single objective light sheet fluorescence microscope at the UCSF Center for Advanced Light Microscopy!

Also pictured is @nicostuurman.bsky.social and @kahsage.bsky.social.

Firmware Emulators title: “Firmware Emulators for Microscope Devices” author: Nico Stuurman date: 2025-12-21 —

One of the difficulties in developing code for microscopes is to get access to the equipment. So, wouldn't it be nice to have emulators? Turns out that AI is really good at converting documentation into an emulator: nicost.github.io/microscope-t...

I made teaching tools for training people on the SNOUTY.
Here they are for other people! I recommend laminating them so you can draw on them with dry erase markers :)

@tanner-fadero.bsky.social told me there was a discussion about the unofficial name for #snouty V3. We have had Mr. Snouty and King Snouty, and there were people suggesting Emperor Snouty. I think it is time for a Lady or EMPRESS snouty. I have created Art to support this.

This was a quick sketch for the super kind postdoc Lisa Randolf who has kindly been providing me with samples to test on our microscope.

Congratulations to Takeshi Tsusaka on their recent publication on Reversible histone deacetylase activity www.nature.com/articles/s41....

Also, thank you to Takeshi for acknowledging our core facility, putting in hardware information about the microscope, and telling me about it all!!!!

I just like to make my images colorblind friendly, which was the color choice. I could make the light path text multi colored though!

Slow-mo Calcium response!
Here is a little neutrophil with a calcium sensor doing its best to respond to a chemoattractant!

Work done by Evelyn Strickland inspired this! Check out her paper on self-extinguishing relay waves in neutrophil swarming

Decorated pumpkins at work! I had to go with a Vampire microscope because microscopes are light vampires.

Bonus for anyone who noticed its deadly ultraviolet wings!

Magnification is not resolution!
Resolution is the minimum distance required to distinguish between two objects. You need to take into account how light spreads and refraction. Magnification just makes things bigger.
I drew this for a workshop I’m helping to teach!

I’m behind on challenges because I guess it was Smaugust, for some reason I thought there was a Smaugtember with all the dragon images on my feed.
Anyway it made me want to draw a dragon and I just like the idea of a giant powerful dragon performing delicate work.

Turns out I can’t help but draw microscopes on things. This ended up being an exercise in transposition to draw a microscope on this little marmal toy. I feels like a little puzzle that I will need to work on.
