Donald Trump is now badly wounded. Europe can seize an advantage | Will Hutton It’s time to fashion a new global trade order without the US

This is what they call a historic turning point

“The independent forecaster Frontier Economics reckons that the impact of US tariffs will shrink UK GDP by 0.7%, while a deeper deal with the EU could instead lift GDP by 1.5%, despite US tariffs”

The policy of the US under Trump can be fairly summarised in three impulses.

To be cruel to those they can be cruel.

To intimidate those whom they can intimidate.

And to gain leverage in respect of those they want to manipulate.

Almost everything comes down to one or more of these impulses.

Intrigued by this narrative that Britain has done well here.

-10% is still v significant.
-We're a big exporter of cars to the US which will be subject to 25%. Terrible for UK auto industry.
-Even if we get a deal we can't avoid the major economic shock to global trade overall.

-We may have a 10% Brexit 'dividend' but the cost of that dividend is the significant lost output since Brexit and trade dislocation with the EU, which the somewhat more generous US treatment does not even nearly compensate for.

For Americans who didn’t get the joy of living through the Truss/Kwarteng budget, this is the point where the government starts to call the stock market left-wing and/or woke.

Yeah UK is currying favour prostrating ourselves in the most humiliating way before fkn Trump. Brexit driven no doubt, but I hate what Labour r doing and they need to use this miraculous opportunity of the unhinged Trump Presidency/Tariffs to rejoin SM & CU. FFS! #c4news

Why is it that (just like the MP’s in UK during the Brexit aftermath and the dud Deal) the Senators and Congressmen in US put THEIR job security so completely above “National Interest”?
Yet they don’t care at ALL about the jobs lost and businesses ruined by both Brexit and Trump/Musk? #c4news

Ask yourself:

Why would anyone who wasn’t an asset of the Russian government do this?

Why would any decent human being do this?

All the news about the ceasefire appears to come down to the simple fact that Ukraine refused to be bullied into surrender by Trump.

And from that defiance, this has followed.

Trump is setting Ukraine up for an appalling choice: surrender or blame. What's the best and worst case for the Trump Russia strategy?

There is a best and worst case for what is motivating Trump's strategy on Russia and Ukraine. I've thought about them for this piece. But in a sense it's immaterial- either way Zelensky is being set up for an impossible choice: surrender or blame.
