The policy of the US under Trump can be fairly summarised in three impulses.
To be cruel to those they can be cruel.
To intimidate those whom they can intimidate.
And to gain leverage in respect of those they want to manipulate.
Almost everything comes down to one or more of these impulses.
Intrigued by this narrative that Britain has done well here.
-10% is still v significant.
-We're a big exporter of cars to the US which will be subject to 25%. Terrible for UK auto industry.
-Even if we get a deal we can't avoid the major economic shock to global trade overall.
-We may have a 10% Brexit 'dividend' but the cost of that dividend is the significant lost output since Brexit and trade dislocation with the EU, which the somewhat more generous US treatment does not even nearly compensate for.
For Americans who didn’t get the joy of living through the Truss/Kwarteng budget, this is the point where the government starts to call the stock market left-wing and/or woke.

There is a best and worst case for what is motivating Trump's strategy on Russia and Ukraine. I've thought about them for this piece. But in a sense it's immaterial- either way Zelensky is being set up for an impossible choice: surrender or blame.
