you get: the astounding power of the supreme court of the united states of america
we get: some vague modicum of ethical behavior
apparently this bargain was a bridge too far, so I propose a new one, which involves impeachment and jail

I will once again posit you could win with >70% if the vote with the simple "Police settlements come out of their pension fund, not the city funds" policy.
Hey instead of the LA cops getting $3.6 billion dollars a year, and also paying out close to $400 million in settlements, here's an idea ...
Do you ever think there was someone at Fox whose whole job was reining in how weird those movies could have gotten?
"Sure, put TV's Fraiser in black leather and blue fur, but cut the scene where he barks a HENRY V monologue. That's a little too far."

"I know we're supposed be doing The Dark Phoenix Saga here, but what if, instead, we did none of it? How about that?"
I have to admit I was already aged out of watching SpongeBob SquarePants when this episode originally aired.
But my younger colleagues told me to watch this clip.
The actual inciting incident?
A Pride sign that read "I love vagina nom nom nom nom."
Testifying before the house, the Pastor claims that First Amendment protects his right not to see that sign. (It's unclear he was even there.)
They want us out of public life.
This all originally started because a pastor in a small town of Celina did not approve of a local Pride event. Conservatives rallied saying drag should only take place indoors, in front of adults.
Then, they seized on a story about a trans woman in a locker room to push it further.
Williams says that the bill wouldn't apply to "appropriate drag," and said that it's written in a way that obscenity could be determined by individual law enforcement.
Conservatives *want* the vagary inherent in the law because it makes them, and their police, the arbiter of morality. They don't like the idea of justice being blind.
"Of course we won't go after Shakespeare!" they say honestly, and they're correct.
They'll decide what drag is "appropriate."
Like, ma'am, you had a flock of drag queens show up at the state capitol to explain how the bill's language would ban anyone with fake boobs and you still kept it in.
So I'm going to have to go with the broadest possible interpretation of the law. I wish news outlets would too.
The peak of fear mongering. The author claims Ohio HB 249 will jail women for going braless in a T-shirt. HB 249 is about shielding kids from adult performances & imagery —not policing whether women wear bras, bikinis, or T-shirts. Twisting it into "women could be jailed for going braless" isn't just wrong —it's a deliberate misrepresentation. It's common sense to shield kids' innocence from adult performances & imaginary. Nothing but perversion - twisting a bill that aims to protect the innocence of children into something it's not. Do better.
Here's the thing:
If legislators didn't intend for HB 249 to be used against women wearing leggings and low-rise jeans, if they didn't mean for it to be used against trans people existing... THEY COULD FIX THE LANGUAGE.
They drafted it that way for a reason. It's naive to think they won't use it.
Of course, the article also doesn't mention that this was done in service of banning trans people from public spaces.
Instead, they let the legislator run wild saying this about "men" in women's locker rooms and "protecting children's innocence."
This is how gender fascism advances.
(10)(12) "Nudity," "nude," or "state of nudity" means the showing of the human male or female genitals, pubic area, vulva, anus, anal cleft, or cleavage with less than a fully opaque covering; or the showing of the female breasts with less than a fully opaque covering of any part of the nipple.
(12)(14) "Seminude" or "state of seminudity" means a state of dress in which opaque clothing covers not more than the genitals, pubic region, and nipple of the female breast, as well as portions of the body covered by supporting straps or devices.
In addition to the made-up category of "seminudity," HB 249 also expands the definition of "nudity" to include "cleavage" and uncovered "anal cleft"
I dunno. Maybe the journalist could have quoted the bill rather than bothsidesing it.

Media needs to stop with "critics say" and just quote the actual language of the bill.
HB 249 creates a new category of "seminudity" which can be used to arrest women who aren't nude, but are wearing clothing — leggings, t-shirts without bras — that religious groups feel is too provocative.

First saw this story over on Threads, and people really, really, really did not like anyone correcting misinformation about their misreading of the story. We seem to be moving to some sort of post-reality where people just want fake stories that reinforce their beliefs.
