nonzero chance the FBI is plugging LLMs into wiretap data under the legal theory AI alone can’t implicate 4th amendment concerns (semi-known 702 issue). or the NSA has now hard coded wiretaps across all newly built US data centers due to expanded ECSP scope. or probably both.

It's the "no go zones" hoax all over again. They tried this lie in Europe and it succeeded spectacularly. Why not try it in the US?

Canada's gas tax debate is even dumber than it looks The federal government's decision to suspend the excise tax on gasoline combines is an obvious attempt to put politics ahead of policy. It also looks downright sophisticated compared to the populist s...

How are we supposed to make the transition to other fuels or systems without price signals to do so? If every time fuel prices rise, we cut taxes to blunt it, then there's less incentive to switch.

Why is it that price signals, the manifestation of the free market, are some innately wise force when it comes to housing or groceries — but when gas prices rise, we should do everything we can to blunt it? Are drivers exempt from the free market? Are there no alternatives to driving SUVs?

Carney makes the right move by suspending the federal gas tax until Labour Day

Toronto, ON: Earlier today, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans to suspend the federal gas excise tax, which costs drivers 10 cents per litre, beginning next week until Labour Day. For a family looking to fill up a minivan, that will represent savings of roughly seven dollars each and every time they fill up their vehicle.

Jay Goldberg, the Consumer Choice Center’s Canadian Affairs Manager, commented on Carney’s announcement.

“Canadian consumers desperately need a break, with gas prices soaring and living costs reaching unprecedented levels. With nearly half of Canadians now saying they’re $200 away from not being able to pay their bills and filling up at the pump a basic necessity for the vast majority of Canadians, this is a clear move in the right direction to address the issue of affordability. Still, the government could have gone further, by scrapping the so-called Clean Fuel Standard and also removing the federal sales tax from gasoline prices. Nonetheless, in an affordability crisis, every little bit helps, and the government is delivering that much-needed assistance by leaving more money in consumers’ pockets, where it belongs,” said Goldberg.

The Liberals are partying in Montreal. Can the good times last? The Liberal Party's national convention was a jolly affair, marked by high spirits, boisterous parties and widespread acceptance and welcoming of social conservative Marilyn Gladu. But tensions remain...

Liberal MPs showed up as a united front and defended Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to welcome former Tory MP Marilyn Gladu into the fold, brushing off questions of how such a big tent party can maintain its values. @natashabulowski.bsky.social reports from Montreal.
