Noon today! Rally for @edsourceguild.bsky.social! Signing up for the Zoom is preferred but you people are generally pretty lazy so it'll also be streamed on YouTube, Twitch, and Instagram Live. Links are all in the Linktree thingy.

New: Two months after Congress rejected all of Trump's proposed cuts to education funding, Trump is proposing many of the same cuts again. www.edweek.org/policy-polit...
A photo of EdSource reporter Emma Gallegos with the following quote: "Everyone deserves equitable pay. Yet, with my current salary, I can't pay for basic necessities AND save for retirement AND pay rent. The math just doesn't work out."
All we're asking for is a fair contract. It's been over a year since the EdSource Guild unionized, and we still don't have a contract. Guild members are sharing why reaching an agreement on a contract now is so important. What you can do: Spread the word! Like, comment, or share this post.

There are at least 86 public schools named for César Chavez. They face tough, unexpected conversations about changing their names after and investigation surfaced new allegations about the labor leader. www.edweek.org/leadership/s...
Congress approved level funding for K-12 schools. Now what?
In just a few hours, I'll pose that question (and better ones) to a former Ed. Dept. official and a current school district CFO.

New: More federal funding disruptions like the ones that roiled schools all 2025 appear to be on the horizon.

Probably missed but the administration cancelled grants for Career Technical Education. These are programs to train students to be nurses, engineers, electricians, plumbers, software developers, dentists and so many other skills.

The Trump administration has touted efforts to prepare K-12 students for the workforce.
But last summer, the Education Department canceled 19 ongoing grants for school-based projects doing just that.

Donald Trump is dismantling the Education Department piece by piece. Since taking office they've laid off 40% of its staff and moved billions in grant programs to other agencies.

Just two hours until I share some behind-the-scenes insight from my reporting on federal education grants.

New: After 15 months of speculation over how a Republican-controlled Congress under Trump would handle education funding, we have the answer: Virtually no changes.
-Level $$ for Title I, IDEA, Head Start
-No new block grants
-No programs or agencies eliminated

The Washington-Baltimore News Guild strongly condemns the layoffs announced today at The Washington Post. These cuts represent yet another blow to a newsroom that has already been pushed to its limits and a disservice to the readers who rely on The Post for rigorous, independent journalism.
Congress Has Passed an Education Budget. See How Key Programs Are Affected: Federal funding for low-income students and special education will remain level year over year.
Federal grant cuts/cancellations/terminations at the following agencies in the last year have affected K-12 schools:
-AmeriCorps
-Ag.
-Commerce
-Defense
-Energy
-Education
-HHS
-DHS
-DOJ
-Interior
-EPA
-IMLS
-NEA
-NEH

New: The Trump administration during its first year pulled back K-12/higher ed funding for more than 730 Department of Education grants, and hundreds more from other agencies.
We pulled together a list: www.edweek.org/policy-polit...
Could Another Federal Shutdown Affect Education? What We Know: After federal agents shot a Minneapolis man on Saturday, Democrats are now pulling support for a spending bill due by Friday.
This image shows a logo of The Washington Post Guild and our statement: The Post Guild vehemently opposes any more cuts to the staff of The Washington Post. As we’ve seen in recent years, continuing to eliminate scores of workers who make this storied institution what it is only stands to weaken the newspaper, drive away readers and undercut The Post’s mission: to hold power to account without fear or favor and provide critical insight into communities across the region, country and world. If Jeff Bezos no longer supports that mission, then The Post and its readers deserve a steward who does. If you value The Post’s journalism and its renowned past — if you care about its future — we ask that you join us in our call to #SaveThePost.
#SaveThePost, Jeff Bezos.
New: Congress is on the verge of (largely) rebuking President Trump's budget proposal for education.
No major funding cuts, no block grants...but also no explicit block on ED efforts to shift program staff elsewhere. www.edweek.org/policy-polit...
President Trump took office one year ago today.
Since then, his administration has disrupted at least $12 billion in federal funding for education (and likely much more).
I did my best to tabulate the damage for @edweek.org: www.edweek.org/policy-polit...
But Department of Education funds aren't the only ones worth examining.
Cuts or changes to at least 67 federal grant programs from 14 agencies outside the Ed. Dept. affected K-12 schools in the last year. www.edweek.org/policy-polit...
The U.S. Department of Education alone moved to cancel, discontinue, or terminate more than 730 grants (!) across 30 separate K-12 and higher education programs.
Those grants were collectively worth at least $2.2 billion. Only a small fraction have been reinstated. www.edweek.org/policy-polit...

🚨PRESS FREEDOM ALERT: The NewsGuild-CWA strongly condemns the FBI search of a Washington Post reporter’s home and the seizure of her electronic devices by federal agents.
More to come.
