New article out in @thirdworldq.bsky.social. I explore whether labour law can move beyond its productivist logic and how the notion of a just transition (referenced by the IACtHR) may help rethink labour law so that climate transitions leave no workers behind.

🤑 Bogus self-employment costs the UK about £8.5bn every year, I told the BBC.
✍️ This includes Uber, Deliveroo, Oxbridge colleges, construction firms + hair salons writing sham self-employment contracts for their staff.

In my view the Commission argument against regularisation is unfounded as the law now stands. Here's Article 6.4 of the Returns Directive, which allows Member States to regularise the status of irregular migrants. eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-conten...
Important new article on informality under the IASHR by @mauropucheta.bsky.social and @renanbkalil.bsky.social, open access in the ILJ. Exploring the potential for a rights-based model and calling for a more systematic recognition of informal workers by the Court. academic.oup.com/ilj/advance-...
Excited to see our article published in the Industrial Law Journal!
We argue that, building on the Inter-American Court’s protective jurisprudence, informal workers in Latin America should be recognised as a vulnerable group, given the structural nature of informality. doi.org/10.1093/indl...

Trump fired the NLRB's pro-worker general counsel and its acting chair.
He's effectively gutted the agency tasked with defending the rights of workers to organize.
Guess who has recently filed lawsuits aimed at invalidating the agency altogether?

EU and Mercosur agree free trade agreement: ec.europa.eu/commission/p...
Qs and As: ec.europa.eu/commission/p...
Still needs to go through ratification process, of course
The question remains: will internal divisions derail this accord, or will we finally see the fruition of negotiations that began formally in 1999? Time will tell - but the potential here is historic. (5/5)
Beyond its economic impact, this agreement includes key sustainability commitments, such as:
- Recognising the Paris Agreement as a cornerstone of the EU-Mercosur relationship.
- Promoting the protection of labor rights aligned with ILO standards. (4/5)
For the EU, however, the path is more complex. The negotiations at the European Council and European Parliament will undoubtedly require careful attention, given the EU's intricate decision-making processes (and the staunch opposition of some countries). (3/5)
On the Mercosur side (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay), approval appears relatively straightforward, as national legislatures are likely to endorse the deal - though Argentina’s case will be worth watching closely. (2/5)
The European Union-MERCOSUR agreement represents the world's largest trade and investment partnership, uniting a market of nearly 750 million people. While this is a significant milestone, it's just the beginning of what could be a lengthy ratification process. 🧵 (1/5)
I spoke to BBC Farming Today on the Seasonal Worker Visa and exploitation risks for migrant agricultural workers - available from c4.45 minutes in www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/... . The visa is restrictive, with a short duration and limits on changing employer, while workers incur significant costs.

EU employment law - latest redraft of proposed EU law on traineeships - not agreed yet, but Member States' ministers will discuss and might agree on Monday - data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document...
If agreed, would still need to be negotiated with the European Parliament
The Spanish platform Glovo announces it will now hire its riders as workers. Spanish colleagues can correct me, but I think this results from a clear, simple legal rule and, above all, systematic enforcement by the Labour Inspectorate and other bodies. @luzrodriguez.bsky.social @ibdehere.bsky.social
