Can someone in DC please get me two of these National Cherry Blossom Festival commemorative @wmata.com SmarTrip cards if they're still available? 🌸

If they're sold out, then two of the regular cards would be great! Thanks so much in advance!!

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

As a counter to the "what's the point because things will never change" crowd, having current mayors in different cities so clearly challenge the premise that cars are good and necessary for full enfranchisement in society is not a thing that would have happened just a few short years ago.

Please, I am begging people: never again repeat the claim that only two people were killed in the occupation of Minnesota.

Since Larry Schwartz started this fare evasion crusade well before the pandemic, I have said over and over and over again that you cannot enforce your way to lower fare evasion rates. You must design your way to them. It's going to take the MTA nearly a decade to get there, but we're getting there.

If you live in IL, consider filing a witness slip against this bill. It's masquerading as a kid safety measure, and like many things sold to "protect children" it doesn't do what's on the label. What it really amounts to is mandatory surveillance infrastructure baked into your operating system.

“We handed over some aspect of critical operations to a person we don’t really know and didn’t vet before hiring, who doesn’t care about working for us or future employment, who is legally immune and who won’t even remember any of this afterwards” is only a slight exaggeration of some LLM usage

The newly elected mayor of Paris celebrated his victory by riding a bike around the city. He ran on:
—60,000 new social houses
—15 express bus routes
—Completing a full bike network
—Changing ring road to a blvd
—1000 new pedestrian streets
—300 new hectares of parks

We can do better.

West Portal crash: S.F. judge says driver who killed family of 4 will get probation Mary Fong Lau, 80, will face no jail time according to remarks from San Francisco Superior Court Judge Bruce Chan. She must complete 200 hours of community service and undergo probation.

Mary Fong Lau, the 80 year old woman who killed four people including a baby and a toddler after crashing into a bus stop going 75mph the wrong way down a 25mph street, has been sentenced to probation and will not permanently lose her drivers' license.

This is a despicable miscarriage of justice.

folded bike in box

Having to remove the seat and stem to get the 12 speed P Line on the airplane box takes a little bit of whimsy out of the folding bike experience.

I, too, am calling for people to cut oil demand. In addition to these ideas, also try demanding:

-adequate funding for transit operations,
-protected bike lanes, and
-an end to freeway expansions.

Bicycle infrastructure has a minimal footprint that preserves nature and enhances our surroundings. Car infrastructure demands the opposite. It clears the landscape and sterilizes our environment, quite literally paving over the very things that make our world enjoyable.

The @transit.app people do a *tremendous* job of incentivizing you to tell them about what's up with the bus by constantly being like "look at all the avatars of other people you've helped". From an app design perspective it's fascinating.

Even in a world of extremes, some events still stand out to me. This is one. All-time monthly records are being shattered.

The size of this ridge across the western U.S. is truly striking for March, and we see a very clear climate change connection.
