I do actively try to do this; I can imagine how hard it is with small children on public transport, so am quite a regular puller of faces and jiggler of keys to distract babies and toddlers.

That's absolutely delightful. As you say, OF COURSE you'd want to make a baby happy (and as they're very easily distracted, it's often quite easy).
