I’m at typical Home Counties pub with cars that cost more than my northern house and neurotypical families having strange reciprocal social interactions. It’s odd. Or I’m odd. Can’t work out which.

Internalised ableism and ignorance around intersectionality is particularly pervasive in the ND community. There’s research in other minority communities about inadvertently recreating toxic power structures. I can see it developing in the ND community before my eyes.

I think the increased rhetoric around the double empathy problem sets us up to assume that other autistic/ shared ND characteristic people will be safe communication partners.
It isn’t just therapy, it’s workplaces, social environments, online spaces too.

I bless this Bluesky with a visual presentation of the warming scent of Cheetos, Doritos and digestive biscuits.

Absolutely. I think it comes from a place of trauma and disenfranchisement and collective internalised ableism.
I feel like there’s a paper in there somewhere 😅

Had to replicate the same power tropes of racism, ableism, sexism but with an autistic acceptable costume.
Ie, “we will accept you if you are *our* type of autistic”. A bit like the bullied kids forming an alliance and starting to bully a more vulnerable kid just bc they can.

Ah thank you so much. It is really interesting how it seems to have started out in a clunky, dichotomous “us vs them” discourse around high and low functioning autism and the ND paradigm. I think it is much more subtle than that. I think for the ND paradigm to be palatable it has (cont)

Things like aspie supremacy, autistic gender power dynamics, white feminist autistic critical… things that address power dynamics existing in the autistic community.

Let’s start strong.
Problematic issues in contemporary autistic/ ND communities:
So, there is the whole ableism aspie supremacy thing 😣
There’s a world of racism we are only just starting to look at ☹️
Are we addressing how the autistic community addresses sexism and gender? 🤔
