Anyway, thanks for the excuse to get this random assortment of thoughts out. Completely agree.

Rare's aesthetic back then was so strong it carried their games, regardless of if the mechanics were interesting.

Nuts & Bolts is proof. It's technically a better 'game', but you can't just make a Banjo-Kazooie without any of its charisma. It's the entire point. No wonder people hated it.

I feel the simplicity of being a collectathon actually helps to not distract from the game's charm, kind of like how ambience can serve a scene better than music or how simplicity in details can aid gameplay.

The opinion I've formed of the game from my previous playthrough of it is that its personality is so likeable that it doesn't matter that the game underneath is as menial as "put square in square hole".
