For Favored Terrain, could remove the aforementioned "barrier" limit (So an Underdark Ranger could sense things in an adjacent cavern), extend radius, and/or give exact creature type.

I'd almost do something similar to Detect Evil and Good, but expanded to apply to any creature.
Short range, knowledge and exact location of creatures, Action cast, lasts 10 minutes. Doesn't say exactly what the creature is, just type. Maybe limited by barriers of some kind.

It's a disappointing feature for both DM and player.
It seems like yours is trying to give a little more info at the cost of taking some more time, but I think that's still going to feel disappointing. Especially on a small map, the information isn't going to be insightful for the player regardless.

It's possibly better for the DM, but for the ranger it's rough because from the player side, the ranger already lacks impactful features, and it's disappointing to only get knowledge of a creature's existence (which is often no surprise) rather than any information.
