I had an immature-type oriole this morning in Mississippi that I’m trying to string into a Bullock’s Oriole. I’m looking at the pale undertail (as opposed to orange), the very grey belly, and maybe a line thru the eye? Any opinions vs Baltimore Oriole?

What about Lewis’s Woodpecker -> Pink-bellied Woodpecker? Or Rose-bellied

This is a great decision. Bird names should tell us something about the bird itself. I can’t wait for all the awesome new names!

Drab and distant birds are studied less than their fancy-feathered friends bioRxiv - the preprint server for biology, operated by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a research and educational institution

✨New preprint!

We report that nearly half of the variation in research effort on 293 bird species in the US+Canada is explained by just 3 factors: 1) visual appeal, 2) breeding range size, & 3) # of universities w/in that range. Here’s what we did:🧵

Tomorrow is the last day of our annual DoD PIF steering committee meeting, hosted at Ft. Carson this year. Highlight was Dr. Scott Somershoe spending a day with us to talk about PIJA and declining grassland birds! Plus I picked up my lifer Sage Thrasher, no complaints there
