Great to speak at the London SAS Conference with Specialty, Associate Specialist and Specialist doctors from across London.
SAS doctors are the backbone of the NHS, delivering expert care every day, often without the recognition they deserve.
Thank you for all you do.
It must take active steps to close those gaps, to give the NHS and the patients it serves, additional staff and facilities that are so clearly needed.

The action & preparation must start immediately. If not, any plans will be meaningless & leave UK nations no better prepared than they were in 2020. As a first step, governments must quantify current staffing & other existing deficits that both anaesthesia & intensive care are currently facing (4/5)
It is our view that for future plans to be fit for purpose, governments must look at staffing, beds, & equipment – and how levels can be improved – right now. Given the lead in time to train intensivists & anaesthetists, these plans cannot be created and left in a drawer for the next pandemic (3/5)
The report acknowledges several vital truths about the state of hospitals that we made forcefully to the Chair, Baroness Hallett, during our role as core participants in the Inquiry. (2/5)
“We coped, but only just.” This is the key message of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry which released its report into the impact of the pandemic on healthcare systems earlier today. As anaesthetists and intensivists, our members know this first-hand. (thread)(1/5)
We are dismayed by findings in this year’s NHS Staff Survey that show discrimination, racism, unwanted sexual behaviour & violence continue to affect patients and staff.
We reiterate our call that more needs to be done to make the NHS a safer and more just environment 👉️ buff.ly/U0UfwY3
We need more SAS in medical management. Helena is an absolutely amazing manager AND a jobbing SAS anaesthetist @uclh.bsky.social. Inspiring to hear her story at the inaugural London SAS conference.

The 10-year health plan for England is full of ambition & we welcome the acknowledgement that the NHS needs to make big, bold changes in order to be sustainable.
We eagerly await concrete details of how this vision becomes a plan and of how anaesthetists can play their part 👉 buff.ly/FjMmvvb

Our response to NHS England's Medical Training Review highlights the current lack of training places, the inflexibility of training and the need for SAS doctors to be included in this work.

“There is no such thing as a non-training doctor”.
Dr Emma Wain wonderfully summed up who SAS doctors are and why they’re so important at our SAS Doctors Reception.
